New Game of Thrones Prequel Will Tell the Story Fans Have Been Begging For (Just Not the Way They Ever Expected)

The universe of Game of Thrones continues to grow with the successful new series House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. While more spinoffs were planned, one upcoming project promises to be particularly unique within the franchise.

From the start of Game of Thrones, the story of Aerys II Targaryen, also known as “The Mad King” and the last Targaryen ruler, was a significant part of the show’s history. Now, a new Game of Thrones project officially titled The Mad King is in development, with creator George R.R. Martin playing a key role.

The Mad King Will Be Game of Thrones‘ First Stage Production

A stage play based on Game of Thrones, titled The Mad King, is officially coming this summer to the Royal Shakespeare Company’s theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, UK. There’s even talk it might move to London’s West End after its initial run. The Royal Shakespeare Theatre is a highly respected venue, suggesting this production will be a major event with a lot of buzz.

Dominic Cooke will direct The Mad King, a play developed over several years with playwright Duncan Macmillan. Casting is currently in progress, though no actors have been announced yet. George R.R. Martin, an RSC veteran, is collaborating with Macmillan on the project, expanding upon existing lore and sharing previously unrevealed details. Macmillan describes Martin as a generous but protective creator – a reasonable stance given the mixed reactions to the end of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, and the ongoing wait for the final books in the A Song of Ice and Fire series. Following the success of stage adaptations for Harry Potter and Stranger Things, Game of Thrones is attempting a particularly ambitious theatrical venture that seems well-suited to the show’s established world and style.

Game of Thrones: The Mad King Is Telling The Story Fans Have Longed to See

The play Game of Thrones: The Mad King takes place more than five years before the start of the HBO series. It begins with a key event in Game of Thrones history: The Great Tourney at Harrenhal. During the tourney, Rhaegar Targaryen, the eldest son of King Aerys, shocked everyone by winning the joust and choosing Lyanna Stark – who was engaged to Robert Baratheon – as his “queen of love and beauty” instead of his wife. This act ignited a forbidden romance between Rhaegar and Lyanna, but also threw the political landscape of Westeros into chaos. It ultimately led to King Aerys II’s descent into madness, Rhaegar and Lyanna running away together and having a son (Jon Snow), and Robert Baratheon leading a rebellion with Ned Stark and Jon Arryn. This rebellion, known as Robert’s Rebellion, resulted in the Mad King’s death, the end of the Targaryen dynasty, and Robert Baratheon taking the Iron Throne.

Fans of Game of Thrones have frequently requested a dramatization of the events known as “Robert’s Rebellion,” and it’s often been suggested as a potential movie. It’s surprising to see this rich backstory told as a stage play, and even more so that the story focuses on King Aerys II instead of Robert Baratheon or Ned Stark. However, familiar characters like Ned and Robert will appear, but as much younger versions of themselves. According to one of the play’s creators, the main characters are all in their twenties, offering a new perspective on their journeys and how they became the people viewers know from the TV series. A key theme of the play is the characters’ coming-of-age and the experiences that shaped them.

The play will feature Lyanna Stark in a prominent role. Set during the time of the Mad King, Lyanna will be portrayed as a teenager, around 16 or 17 years old. According to the creator, she’s a skilled fighter, challenging the typical expectations for women of that era. She’s described as intelligent, spirited, and somewhat rebellious, but also bound by the constraints of her noble family – a dynamic similar to those seen in Shakespearean dramas. The play will also explore the romantic relationship between Lyanna and Rhaegar, drawing parallels to the story of Romeo and Juliet.

There Will Be Action (But No Deep Lore Knowledge Required)

Similar to the TV show, the main challenge for The Mad King is capturing the large-scale medieval action—think jousting tournaments, massive battles, and a violent climax involving the king. Following the success of the recent battle episode in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, fans have high expectations for this new installment of Game of Thrones. According to Cooke, they’re working to stage the action in a visually compelling and dramatic way, rather than simply relying on spectacle.

What I really appreciated about this production is how accessible it is. The creators clearly wanted to welcome newcomers – people who’ve never seen Game of Thrones – and make them feel just as invested as die-hard fans. As the director explained, they aimed for a show that works for everyone, regardless of their familiarity with the source material. They didn’t want to alienate anyone! It’s a self-contained story that should be enjoyable on its own, but also offers plenty of extra details and backstory for those already in the know. It’s a clever approach, making it a great entry point and a treat for long-time fans.

I’m so excited that I can watch Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms all on HBO Max! And I love being able to chat about everything that’s happening with other fans over on the ComicBook Forum – it’s the perfect place to discuss the latest episodes and theories.
