So, I finally got my hands on Avowed on PS5, and honestly, it’s a pretty solid RPG – Obsidian really delivered on the fantasy vibe. It didn’t exactly blow everyone away at launch, but a huge new update has seriously improved things. I’m having a blast playing it on my PS5, but I was hoping for a bit more of a visual boost on the PS5 Pro. Sadly, it doesn’t seem like the Pro version offers much over the standard PS5 experience. It’s still a great game, just a little disappointing on that front.

Obsidian revealed in January 2026 that Avowed would be coming to PlayStation 5 shortly after its updated release. This new version isn’t just about adding a new platform; it also includes a New Game Plus mode, three new playable races, and a highly anticipated Photo Mode. It’s a significant update that matches the move to a new console, but some PlayStation fans are still hoping for additional features in another area.

Avowed Has Minimal PS5 Pro Enhancements

Digital Foundry recently discovered that the PS5 version of Avowed doesn’t perform noticeably better on the PS5 Pro than on the standard PS5. Despite being labeled as “PS5 Pro Enhanced” on the PlayStation Store, tests showed no significant improvements on the more powerful console. The PS5 Pro did maintain target resolutions a bit more consistently, but the difference is so small most players wouldn’t even notice it. Interestingly, Avowed‘s performance on the PS5 Pro was the same as on the Xbox Series X, indicating the game doesn’t utilize any special features to take advantage of the PS5 Pro’s extra power.

Unlike some PS5 Pro enhanced games, Avowed doesn’t use PSSR or any special graphics settings for the new console. While Digital Foundry noted that games like Silent Hill F have had problems with stuttering when using PSSR, its absence in Avowed might not be a significant drawback. However, some players may be disappointed that the game doesn’t take advantage of the PS5 Pro’s improved hardware, especially considering the praise Avowed has already received for its visuals and performance.

It’s not surprising that Obsidian Entertainment, now owned by Microsoft, focused on optimizing Avowed for Xbox before PlayStation. However, other games that used to be exclusive to Xbox have been improved more significantly on the PS5 Pro. For example, Forza Horizon 5, published by Microsoft, includes special features for the PS5 Pro, like ray tracing. While Avowed does have ray tracing on the PS5 Pro, it’s also available on the standard PS5 and even the Xbox Series S, though with reduced quality. The lack of features specifically designed for the PS5 Pro might not bother most players, but it could feel disappointing for those who purchased Sony’s high-end console.

It’s not just Avowed that hasn’t fully utilized the PS5 Pro. Code Vein 2, released in January, didn’t receive any specific upgrades for the console. Even after several years, PS5 Pro owners aren’t always guaranteed better performance or visuals in games, even big ones. However, the PS5 version of Avowed does include several nice improvements and new content, making it a potentially good purchase for PlayStation players.
