George RR Martin confirms all-new Game of Thrones prequel set just 10 years before original series

It’s been almost 15 years since Game of Thrones first aired, and fans are still getting surprises! George R.R. Martin just announced a new prequel series set in the world of Westeros, coming out this year.

George R.R. Martin, the author of the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ book series, is working with the Royal Shakespeare Company to debut ‘Game of Thrones: The Mad King.’ This new play, written by Duncan Macmillan (known for ‘Every Brilliant Thing’), takes place ten years before the events of the first season of the ‘Game of Thrones’ TV show.

As many viewers recall, the story starts with Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy) ruling as king after a bloody war to overthrow Aerys II Targaryen, also known as the Mad King and the father of Daenerys.

The war featured key characters like Ned Stark, Tywin Lannister, and Jaime Lannister, so we can anticipate seeing many of these well-known actors – from families like the Starks, Lannisters, Baratheons, and Martells – return in the show.

Step back in time to a world on the brink of change. As a harsh winter ends at Harrenhal, the promise of spring arrives. A grand feast is held the night before a jousting tournament, where new romances blossom and everyone wonders who will compete.

However, hidden from view, people within the King’s closest advisors are secretly plotting against him, disturbed by his cruel and violent rule. Meanwhile, the sounds of war are growing closer.

As a total movie buff, this sounds like an epic! It’s a story about family, and how far people will go for power, especially when old prophecies and the rightful heir are involved. It’s not just about who deserves to win, but who can convince everyone they’re the hero. I’m already wondering who will make it through all the chaos and who will ultimately come out on top – it’s going to be a wild ride!

George R.R. Martin, the author of the ongoing ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ book series, recently shared that when he began writing ‘Game of Thrones,’ he envisioned it solely as a book – a space where his imagination could run free.

I was thrilled when my work was turned into a TV series, letting audiences experience the world I created. Now, to see it adapted for the stage is a wonderful surprise that I’m incredibly excited about.

Theater is a special experience. It’s a space where performers and the audience can connect through imagination and, ideally, create something truly memorable.

When I started thinking about adapting Game of Thrones for the stage, the Royal Shakespeare Company immediately felt like the right fit. Shakespeare is the most important writer in English, and his work has always been a huge influence on me and my writing.

He also struggled with bringing a battle to life on stage, which is reassuring – we’re facing similar hurdles. It’s going to be exciting to see how this new play comes to life with a live audience.

Duncan has done a fantastic job adapting the story, staying true to the original world. I’m thrilled that both longtime fans and newcomers will get to enjoy this new version on the big screen.

Duncan Macmillan, who adapted the show, and director Dominic Cooke explained that George’s story is epic and explores themes similar to Shakespeare – including power struggles, ambition, revolt, insanity, fate, and tragic romance. They’ve drawn inspiration from Shakespeare’s histories and tragedies throughout the production, making the Royal Shakespeare Company a fitting venue.

We’re excited to finally share this play with everyone – whether you’re already a fan of George’s books or the HBO show, or if you’re completely new to the story. We think it offers a unique experience that’s both deeply personal and grand in scope.

The play is scheduled to be performed at the Royal Shakespeare Company’s theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon during the summer of 2026. More information will be revealed shortly. Tickets will first be available to RSC members starting April 14, 2026, with general public booking opening sometime in April 2026.
