A popular PlayStation 3 game has suddenly disappeared from the PlayStation Store, leaving fans unable to buy it. While games are often removed from digital stores when licenses expire or online services end – usually newer titles – publishers sometimes bring older games back with updated versions. When they do, they often remove the original game from sale. This seems to be what happened in this case.
Konami unexpectedly removed Metal Gear Solid 4 and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker from the PlayStation Store and Xbox Live. This means PlayStation and Xbox fans can no longer buy these games digitally in their original versions. Metal Gear Solid 4 was only removed from the PlayStation Store, while Peace Walker was taken down from both PlayStation and Xbox 360, as well as the PSP store. Although Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is still available as part of the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, Metal Gear Solid 4 never had any other digital releases, making it currently impossible to buy digitally.
Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 To Blame?
Konami will be releasing Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 on August 27th. The removal of some older games from digital stores is likely being done to make way for the new collection. While not always typical, this is a practice sometimes used by Japanese game companies.
Konami hasn’t officially commented on why these games are being removed, so everything we know right now is just guesswork. We don’t anticipate they will address it, but we’ll update this article if that changes. For now, players of older consoles, those who value authenticity, game preservationists, and dedicated fans are all disappointed with Konami’s choice.
PlayStation Fans Not Happy
A popular post on X (formerly Twitter), with more than half a million views, has strongly criticized Konami for this change, calling it a disgrace.
Another Metal Gear Solid fan said it’s good that physical copies are still easy to find, but it’s still frustrating. They wish the company had given people some advance notice about this issue.
One fan noted that physical copies of Metal Gear Solid 4 and Peace Walker aren’t too expensive for games of their age, which softens the blow a bit. However, many players today only buy digital games. If you’re one of them and want to play Metal Gear Solid 4, you’ll have to wait until August 27th and purchase the complete Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2, which will be considerably more expensive.
