Fans react to Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible 9 rumor

DeuxMoi, a popular Instagram account that shares celebrity gossip, recently posted a rumor they received anonymously. The rumor claimed that Chloe Zhao, who recently directed the film Hamnet, is being considered to write and direct the next Mission: Impossible movie, number nine. According to the post, Tom Cruise has already met with Zhao and they’ve begun discussing ideas for the film’s story, and writing is now in progress. DeuxMoi noted they couldn’t confirm the information.

Even though it’s just a rumor, many fans are reacting negatively to the possibility of another Mission: Impossible movie starring Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, voicing their surprise and disappointment online.

Before the recent speculation, most people thought Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning would be the last time Tom Cruise played Ethan Hunt. Cruise himself had even suggested this, telling The Hollywood Reporter that the eighth movie in the series would be his last, and emphasizing that the title, ‘Final Reckoning,’ was intentional.

Before this recent news, Tom Cruise had said he wanted to continue making Mission: Impossible movies. At the Australian premiere of Dead Reckoning Part One, he told The Sydney Morning Herald he hoped to have a career as long-lasting as Harrison Ford’s, pointing out that Ford was still starring in films like 2023’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny at age 80.

Tom Cruise expressed his admiration for Harrison Ford, saying, ‘He’s a true legend, and I hope I can have a career as long as his.’ Cruise joked that he has twenty years to go before he reaches Ford’s level and hopes to continue making Mission: Impossible movies until he’s the same age.

Following the success of Top Gun: Maverick, Jeff Sneider reported that Tom Cruise hoped to have his co-star, Glen Powell, take over the lead role in future Mission: Impossible movies. However, Powell quickly dismissed the idea during an interview on The Pat McAfee Show, jokingly saying his mother wouldn’t allow him to take the job and calling it a dangerous undertaking – ‘a death trap,’ according to him.
