Destiny 2’s Shadow and Order Update Delayed to June 9th, Undergoing “Large Revisions”

Whether it’s due to the intense work on the recent ‘Marathon’ announcement and a possible shift in developer focus to the upcoming extraction shooter, or Bungie tackling bigger problems within Destiny 2, the ‘Shadow and Order‘ update has been pushed back. Originally scheduled for March, it will now release on June 9th.

The official Destiny 2 account on BlueSky announced that the upcoming update will be significantly improved with several quality-of-life changes and will also be rebranded with a new name.

Okay, so we’re still a little ways off from getting all the specifics, but the team’s planning to flesh out the weapon upgrading system we already heard about. Plus, they’re going to expand the tiered gear system to all raids and dungeons, which is awesome! We’re also getting an update to Pantheon – they’re calling it 2.0 – and they’re even boosting the stats on Tier 5 Exotic armor. Basically, they’re making a lot of improvements to gear, and I can’t wait to see the full details when they’re ready to share!

Players can look forward to ongoing bug fixes, with Guardian Games returning next month. Iron Banner will be happening more often, starting in April, and we’ll continue to see rotating Portal modifiers. We’ll share more details about what’s coming in the future and the update itself as we get closer to its release.

It’s been a difficult period for Destiny 2 since the release of The Final Shape. Not only did the conclusion to the Light and Darkness Saga reportedly not meet expectations, but Bungie hasn’t been able to significantly re-engage players with The Edge of Fate. While the Renegades expansion, based on Star Wars, was more popular, the number of players, particularly on Steam, is still falling to all-time lows.

Things haven’t been easy for the development team, with a lot of challenges along the way. Hopefully, the launch of Marathon on March 5th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC will help turn things around. We’ll see in the coming weeks, and you can even get a first taste with the Server Slam test from February 26th to March 2nd.

We’re making big changes to our next major Destiny 2 update, originally called Shadow and Order, which means it will launch later than planned. We’re adding significant improvements to make the game experience better, and with these changes, we’re also giving the update a new name. Look for it to arrive on June 9, 2026.
