Fourteen years after its initial release, Ridley Scott’s 2012 sci-fi horror film, a prequel to a beloved series, is finding a new audience and gaining popularity on streaming services worldwide.
While Prometheus helped revive the Alien movie series financially, people are still split on whether it successfully served as a prequel to the original 1979 film. This discussion continues today, 14 years later, and has been kept alive by the film’s wide availability on Netflix.
People are rediscovering the movie Prometheus, and it’s currently the most-watched film on Netflix worldwide as of February 19, 2026.
The latest film in the series is doing incredibly well, particularly in Nordic countries. It’s currently number one in Sweden, the home country of star Noomi Rapace, and also in Denmark, Norway, and Finland. The movie has also reached the top spot in Iceland, where some of its most striking scenes were filmed – notably using the impressive Dettifoss waterfall in Vatnajökull National Park.
Additional filming for the movie Prometheus took place in the Wadi Rum desert in Jordan, and the country’s Netflix viewers have made it the second most popular film on the platform. Across the Middle East, Prometheus is performing very well on Netflix, reaching the #1 spot in Bahrain, Egypt, Israel, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.
Prometheus topped the charts in Australia, Guy Pearce’s home country, and New Zealand. While it reached number four in Germany, where Michael Fassbender is from, the film was number one in many other European countries, such as Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Greece, Poland, Romania, Serbia, and Slovenia.
Charlize Theron’s film Prometheus is gaining traction in both her home country of South Africa, where it reached number five on the February 19th chart, and the UK, the home country of the director, Ridley Scott, where it’s currently number four.
Okay, so when Prometheus came out in 2012, it really split people. I remember checking Rotten Tomatoes and seeing it had a 73% score from critics and a 68% audience score – a pretty big difference! Everyone seemed to agree the movie looked amazing and the acting was good, but the story itself? That’s where opinions really diverged. Some folks felt it strayed too much from what made the original Alien so great, and they weren’t shy about saying so.
Screenrant’s 2012 review of Prometheus highlighted the film’s stunning visuals and engaging story, and commended director Ridley Scott’s skillful direction. The review stated that Prometheus is a strong return to form for Scott, offering a captivating sci-fi narrative, beautiful 3D effects, and solid filmmaking overall.
Despite the criticisms and mixed reactions when Prometheus first came out, the movie continues to captivate audiences worldwide. People keep revisiting it to unravel its lasting puzzles and argue about its quality.
