Peter Krause’s Next Acting Role Revealed After Shocking 9-1-1 Exit

Peter Krause is heading back to the line of duty, but in new protective gear.

Just nine months after his character, Captain Bobby Nash, was unexpectedly written off the TV show 9-1-1 during its eighth season, the experienced actor has landed a new leading role.

Peter, age 60, is joining the cast of NBC’s new crime drama, Protection, according to Deadline. The show centers on a law enforcement family who find themselves the target of an unknown attacker. Peter will play Mike Thornhill, a former Secret Service agent and a member of that family, in the pilot episode.

We don’t yet know much about Peter’s role or the other actors in the series. But the show will have a strong creative team: Josh Safran, known for Mean Girls, is writing and executive producing, and Jenna Bush Hager is joining as a producer.

This project will be Hoda Kotb’s first with Universal Studios as part of a new deal. She’ll be turning books featured in her ‘Read with Jenna’ book club—which started in 2019—into limited-run television series.

Fans will be thrilled to see Peter back on screen after his departure from 9-1-1. His exit from the ABC series last April was a shock to viewers. In a dramatic episode, his character Bobby contracted a dangerous virus and ultimately sacrificed himself to save Chimney, played by Kenneth Choi, giving him the last dose of a life-saving vaccine. He also shared a poignant farewell with his on-screen wife, Athena, portrayed by Angela Bassett.

Shortly after the episode’s release, Peter honored his character in a touching statement.

The actor acknowledged fans were understandably disappointed by the loss of his character. He told Variety it was a difficult moment, but emphasized it was a deliberate creative decision for the show. He explained that his character, Bobby Nash, was intentionally written to make that sacrifice and that it served a purpose within the larger story.

He explained that first responders put their lives on the line to save others, and the storyline pays tribute to their bravery. The team behind the show 9-1-1 wants to recognize and honor all the dedicated men and women who work in these dangerous professions and keep our communities safe.

Jennifer Love Hewitt, who plays Maddie Han on 9-1-1, agreed, saying Bobby’s courageous choice truly reflected his character’s values.

It just hasn’t been the same since he left, honestly. Nothing feels quite right. He was the heart of our cast, the one we all looked up to. He was our hero, and to me, he always will be. It’s hard to explain the impact he had on all of us.
