DC Studios Will Release 4 New Movies Before The Batman 2

As a huge DC fan, I’m already counting down the days until The Batman – Part II hits theaters in 2027! But it’s great to hear DC Studios has so much planned for us in the meantime. The Batman 2 will be their second completely separate story – following the Joker: Folie à Deux movie with Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga coming out later next year. It sounds like director Matt Reeves is really building out his vision for Batman, and we’ll be getting more stories featuring all sorts of heroes and villains across the DC universe.

As a huge DC fan, I’m really excited to hear that DC Studios has four movies planned to hit theaters before the sequel to The Batman! James Gunn and Peter Safran, the heads of the studio, are really focused on getting their movie and TV show schedule locked in, and it’s not just the main DC Universe stuff – they’re also doing these cool ‘Elseworlds’ projects. While those Elseworlds stories might feel different from the tone Matt Reeves is going for with The Batman 2, they’ll all connect to a bigger DC story and introduce awesome characters alongside Robert Pattinson’s Batman.

Every DC Movie Being Released Before The Batman 2

How Batman: Knightfall Will Compare to The Batman 2

Warner Bros. Animation is planning to make several movies based on the popular DC Comics storyline, Knightfall. The first film, expected in 2026, will show the famous story of Bane breaking Batman’s back and unleashing all of Batman’s enemies from Arkham Asylum, throwing Gotham City into complete chaos.

As a critic, I’m really hoping this film captures some of the same gritty spirit we saw in The Batman 2. Both projects seem to be leaning into a darker, more complex portrayal of the hero and his deep ties to Gotham. Now, obviously, being animated changes things dramatically. But with the same lead character, audiences will draw comparisons between these two versions of the Dark Knight, especially with the introduction of the hero from the ‘Knightfall’ storyline. It’s inevitable, and frankly, I think a little healthy competition will be good for both films.

Both movies are expected to generate excitement for DC’s future releases, but The Batman 2 is predicted to be much more successful financially and popular online than the Knightfall movie. Still, releasing an animated Batman film in theaters offers a nice change of pace for DC and the superhero genre overall.

Expected Batman Elements in Supergirl

After the release of Superman in 2025, DC Studios will expand its main timeline with Supergirl, directed by Craig Gillespie. This will be the first solo movie for Supergirl in over four decades. Starring Milly Alcock, Eve Ridley, Matthias Schoenaerts, David Krumholtz, and Jason Momoa, the film is based on the Woman of Tomorrow comic book storyline. It follows Kara Zor-El as she turns 23 and then teams up with a young girl named Ruthye for a dangerous journey driven by a quest for revenge.

The upcoming Supergirl movie will likely feel very different from The Batman 2, mainly because of the contrasting tones and characters. The Batman 2 will continue the dark and gritty story of Bruce Wayne rebuilding Gotham and battling familiar enemies. Supergirl, on the other hand, promises a more lighthearted, adventurous story – a cosmic journey with humor and a focus on vengeance, elements that may not be as prominent in the Batman sequel.

While it depends on reviews and fan support, Supergirl could perform similarly to The Batman 2 at the box office (the first Batman film earned around $772 million globally). Following Superman‘s $616 million worldwide gross, Supergirl has a good opportunity to reach a comparable amount, though it will compete with releases like Toy Story 5 and the live-action Moana.

Supergirl will soar into theaters on June 26.

Batman’s Influence on DCU’s Clayface

Just a few months after Supergirl hits theaters, the DC Universe will release its first movie focused on a villain: Clayface. Directed by James Watkins and starring Tom Rhys Harries, Naomi Ackie, and Max Minghella, the film tells the frightening story of Matt Hagen, a struggling actor who transforms into a clay-like monster after a dangerous experiment.

Because Clayface is a well-known Batman villain, its inclusion feels natural in The Batman 2. Both films take place in Gotham City, though in separate universes, and while Clayface is intended as a horror film, The Batman 2 will likely deliver its own share of thrills and suspense thanks to director Matt Reeves’ style.

Because Clayface is a horror movie with a mature rating, it might have trouble competing with The Batman 2 in theaters. Reeves’ sequel will likely reach a wider audience. While Clayface could surprisingly do well—R-rated superhero films are gaining popularity—it also stars a villain most people aren’t familiar with, making it harder to stand out among so many big-budget movies.

Clayface will arrive in theaters on September 11.

How Man of Tomorrow Compares to The Batman 2

Currently, the most recently announced movie in James Gunn’s DC Universe is Man of Tomorrow, a follow-up to the 2025 Superman film. The movie stars David Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult, Rachel Brosnahan, Lars Eidinger, and Frank Grillo, and will feature a team-up between Clark Kent and Lex Luthor to fight Brainiac, who represents the greatest danger Earth has ever faced.

Although both films take place within the DC universe, The Batman 2 and Man of Tomorrow will feel very different. The Batman 2 will continue the dark and realistic tone of the first film, focusing on Batman as a lone hero in Gotham City. Man of Tomorrow, on the other hand, will be a more fantastical story set in Metropolis, bringing together a famous hero and villain with aliens, big action sequences, and exciting drama.

If the movie Man of Tomorrow successfully builds on the foundation laid by previous DC Universe films, it could become the first major box office success for the franchise. Although it will face competition from anticipated releases like Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, Shrek 5, and the next Minecraft movie, this sequel has the potential to perform as well as The Batman did in 2022, particularly with its larger scope and scale.

Man of Tomorrow will soar into theaters on July 9, 2027.
