So, Nintendo just dropped some frustrating news for Switch Online members like me. They’re releasing a retro game a lot of us were expecting to be included with our subscription – maybe even behind the Expansion Pack paywall – but it turns out we’ll actually have to buy it separately for $20. It’s a real bummer because I, and I’m guessing a lot of other people, thought it would be part of the service we’re already paying for.
Nintendo officially announced today that Pokémon LeafGreen and FireRed are coming to Nintendo Switch on February 27th – Pokémon Day! The announcement confirms earlier rumors. This will be accompanied by a new Pokémon Presents presentation. While there isn’t a special version for a potential Switch 2, the games will work on the system. However, unlike some other classic Game Boy Advance titles, you’ll need to purchase LeafGreen and FireRed separately, as they won’t be added to the Nintendo Switch Online service.
Not Remasters Nor Remakes
If this new game were a refreshed version of the original Pokémon games, like a remaster or remake, it would make sense for Nintendo to sell it separately. However, this is simply a re-release, similar to other games offered through the Nintendo Switch Online service. Therefore, many players are surprised and frustrated that they have to pay extra to access it.
The original games were incredibly popular, selling over 12 million copies, so these new versions are likely to be a big hit too – that’s probably why Nintendo didn’t include them with their online service. Even if Nintendo sells half as many copies of these rereleases, they’ll make $120 million, which is a significant profit for a release that cost them very little. This differs from most retro games offered through Nintendo Switch Online, which is why those are included in the subscription service and not sold separately.
The fact that this news came out before the Pokémon Presents indicates the presentation will be quite significant. It’s a major reveal to share separately, implying there are still many other exciting announcements to come.
