Bill Lawrence, the creator of the show, shares some unexpected thoughts about Season 9 and how it will affect the new revival.
Bill Lawrence recently told Deadline that the new Scrubs revival will ignore Season 9, treating the eighth season as the show’s true ending. He explained they’re picking up the story as if Season 8 was the last one aired.
I won’t ignore Season 9, because looking back, it’s a really interesting part of the show’s history. It originally started as a spin-off, planned to be called Scrubs Med and focus on medical school. While it didn’t ultimately succeed as a continuation of Scrubs, I think the writing team did a good job with the first season, which introduced characters like Michael Mosley, Eliza Coupe, Kerry Bishé, and Dave Franco. It was an interesting experiment, even if it didn’t quite work out.
Zach Braff’s comedy Scrubs first aired on NBC in 2001 and quickly became a popular workplace sitcom. The show centers around John Michael “J.D.” Dorian, who starts out as an intern at Sacred Heart Hospital. Along with Braff, the cast includes Judy Reyes, Sarah Chalke, Donald Faison, John C. McGinley, Ken Jenkins, and Neil Flynn.
During its initial broadcast on NBC, Scrubs produced 169 episodes over eight seasons. Just seven months after the final episode of Season 8 aired in May 2009, Season 9 debuted on ABC with a completely new main cast, featuring Eliza Coupe, Michael Mosley, Kerry Bishé, and Dave Franco.
The ninth season of Scrubs received mostly lukewarm to negative feedback from both critics and viewers. Many felt it wasn’t needed, especially since the show had already ended strongly. Currently, Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 53% ‘Fresh’ rating, and audiences only approve with a 35% score on the ‘Popcornmeter’.
What Can Audiences Expect from the Upcoming Scrubs Revival Series?
Fans of Scrubs are excited for the show’s return to ABC on February 25th, with many of the original stars – including Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, John C. Reyes, Neil Flynn, and Ken Jenkins – reprising their roles. Season 10 will also feature new faces, including Saturday Night Live‘s Vanessa Bayer and Disney star Phill Lewis.
In June 2025, details emerged about the upcoming Scrubs revival, including its focus and storyline. The new series will examine how the healthcare system has evolved and impacted the original characters, while also showcasing their continued hopefulness alongside a fresh group of young doctors.
Lawrence said he wants to find out what happened to everyone from the original show – whether they’re still working at the hospital or not.
Scrubs Season 10 premieres on ABC on February 25.
