Everything Taylor Swift Has Said—and Sung—About Getting Married

Travis Kelce wasn’t bothered that Taylor Swift was already very busy and dedicated to her career when he proposed.

Because, as she has explained, he gets it.

As someone who spends a lot of time in the entertainment world, I’ve been thinking about the similarities between what I do and what athletes like Travis Kelce do. We both essentially perform for around three and a half hours in huge stadiums – for him, it’s practice leading up to a game, and for me, it’s rehearsal for a show. It really comes down to different names for the same kind of high-energy performance. He calls it a game, I call it a show, but the core idea is the same!

After finding someone she truly connects with in Travis, the 36-year-old expressed her excitement about marrying him.

She’s been thinking about marriage for a long time, considering it from many angles – personally, through her music, and as a romantic idea. But she wasn’t one of those people who had every detail of her wedding planned before Travis proposed in August 2025.

Taylor shared on U.K.’s Heart Radio that while many people dream of their wedding day, she actually never gave it much thought until she met the person she wanted to marry.

Now that she’s actually met him, there are many things to think about. It seems wedding planning might be beginning now that football season has ended, but they’re starting completely from the beginning.

In a 2012 interview with Cosmopolitan, Taylor described her approach to relationships, mentioning she keeps fabric samples from her wedding dress and has already chosen a catalog tuxedo for her future partner. The interview, published before her relationship with Harry Styles began, also touched on a summer romance with Conor Kennedy. She emphasized that she wants a partner who feels valued, saying, ‘I don’t want him to wonder if it even matters if he’s there.’

At 23, she said she wanted a relationship where both partners supported each other’s goals and ambitions, building a life together based on shared dreams.

Based on her music alone, people might have thought her biggest dream was getting married.

From the very beginning of Taylor Swift’s 2006 debut album, “Mary’s Song” evokes memories of a proposal and wedding, with lyrics recalling the moment someone got down on one knee and the vows exchanged: “You said I do and I did too.”

The idea of a perfect romance is clearly shown in Taylor Swift’s song “Love Story” from her 2008 album, Fearless. The song offers a happy twist on the classic Romeo and Juliet tale, with Romeo proposing and suggesting a future with a wedding.

Similar to how she reflected on past relationships in her song “Fifteen”—singing about once dreaming of marriage but then pursuing larger goals—her views on getting married evolved over time.

The idea of a future together is clearly over, as expressed in the song “We Were Happy,” which was originally unreleased but included on the 2021 re-recording of Fearless. In the song, Taylor sings about a joyful past, recalling, “No one could touch the way we laughed in the dark / Talkin’ ’bout your daddy’s farm / And you were gonna marry me / And we were happy.”

Meanwhile, Taylor Swift’s 2010 album, Speak Now, references the traditional wedding request for anyone to speak up if they object to the marriage – a way of asking if anyone thinks the couple shouldn’t get married.

The title track tells the story at the heart of the album, and in “Foolish One,” Taylor sings about watching someone else get engaged to the person she loves, expressing her sadness with the line, “I’ll get your longing glances, but she’ll get your ring.”

Let’s be real, growing up often means navigating relationships, and I’ve definitely seen that reflected in Taylor’s music. It seems like she’s always been open about writing about the guys she dated, but as she matured, those relationships just didn’t always turn into ‘the one’ – and that’s totally relatable! She’s evolved as she’s experienced more serious connections, and her songwriting reflects that journey.

In a 2014 interview with Rolling Stone, she explained that she used to be very hopeful when starting relationships, imagining a future with marriage and a family. Now, she approaches relationships differently, focusing more on how long they’re likely to last before external factors—like work commitments or public image concerns—intervene.

Taylor Swift shared that it can be really difficult when rumors start about her relationships. She described a situation where she was in the car with someone and a radio report claimed he was about to propose with a diamond ring. She jokingly explained that it led to an awkward moment of questioning each other, and she wondered why anyone would want that kind of attention.

A few years later, she began a relationship with English actor Joe Alwyn, and they were together until 2023. True to her romantic nature, she dedicated the song “Paper Rings” to him on her 2019 album, Lover, imagining a life together. She also beautifully connected her childhood memories of a friend walking her home from school – picturing “sidewalk chalk covered in snow” – to the imagery of a wedding in her song “It’s Nice to Have a Friend,” with lines like “Church bells ring, carry me home / Rice on the ground looks like snow.”

She still believed in the idea of marriage, but as she expressed in her 2022 song “Lavender Haze” from the album Midnights, there’s a whole spectrum of love that exists beyond just casual encounters or being a wife.

After ending her relationship with Alwyn, she released “You’re Losing Me,” a bonus track from her 2023 album Midnights. The song expresses her feelings with lyrics like, “And I wouldn’t marry me either / A pathological people pleaser / Who only wanted you to see her.”

These feelings reminded listeners of Taylor Swift’s song “Champagne Problems” from her 2020 album Evermore, which details a different relationship that didn’t work out. She sings about a lost proposal, saying, “You had your mother’s ring, I had your picture, and your heart broke when I ended things.” The song also imagines what their friends would say, commenting, “She would have been a beautiful bride, it’s a shame things fell apart.”

Okay, so when The Tortured Poets Department finally came out in April 2024, everyone was talking about Travis! She and Travis had been dating for almost a year by then, but honestly? The songs… they hinted at something way more intense and complicated than what we knew about her current relationship. It was like she was pouring out all these really messy, complicated feelings from somewhere else, and I was completely obsessed with figuring out what it all meant!

In a heartfelt tribute to another artist, she beautifully describes a deeply emotional moment in the song’s title track. She sings about a simple gesture – someone moving a ring from one finger to another – and compares it to the feeling of being overwhelmed with love, saying it’s the closest she’s ever felt to her heart bursting.

Taylor Swift seemingly referenced her short relationship with Matty Healy in the song “But Daddy I Love Him.” The lyrics, including “No, you can’t come to the wedding / I know he’s crazy but he’s the one I want,” suggest she was contemplating a relationship with someone others might see as the wrong choice.

In the song, she gazes towards the wedding altar, seemingly hopeful about the future, but then her thoughts shift. She reflects on being hurt and dismissed, remembering discussions about marriage and starting a family, and laments the loss of a relationship that felt so close to becoming real. She expresses a desire to forget the moments when they almost had everything they wanted together.

In her song “So High School,” Taylor Swift playfully imagines a romance with someone she’s really attracted to – a talented basketball player, to be exact. She asks, “Are you gonna marry, kiss, or kill me?” framing it as a game, but hinting that she wants all three from him.

Everything still points to a wedding happening! Now that it’s clear Taylor is excited about marriage, here’s a rundown of everything we know about her plans so far:

It’s hard to imagine Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce having a wedding on just any day; it would definitely need to be a date that’s special to them, or at least to Taylor.

Taylor Swift, a known lover of numbers, shared her enthusiasm for numerology, math, and dates on the August 13th episode of the New Heights podcast. Her two-hour appearance aired 13 days before she and Travis Kelce announced their engagement—though Travis’s father mentioned they had already told close friends and family about their relationship three days prior. Swift described finding these kinds of patterns ‘really fun.’

Travis’s future with the NFL after his current contract ends in 2025 will influence when they set their wedding date. If he continues playing, they’ll plan the wedding during the off-season, sometime between February after the Super Bowl and the start of training camp in July.

As a huge fan, it’s still so strange to even think about Travis potentially retiring after 13 seasons! But if he does, it would open up his schedule for a wedding, and ideally, during Taylor’s favorite month, October. Of course, a lot depends on when—or if—Taylor announces tour dates for her new album, The Life of a Showgirl, which came out on October 3rd. Knowing the tour schedule will really help us figure out when they might be able to celebrate!

Taylor Swift is famous for her close friendships with many celebrities, but she revealed in October 2025 that she hadn’t started planning her bachelorette party yet.

She admitted that people might assume she’d always dreamed of her wedding, but she actually never gave it much thought until she met the person she wanted to marry. She shared this on the U.K.’s Heart Breakfast show.

“So, I haven’t actually even thought about doing a hen do,” she noted, invoking the British slang. “This is the first time I have thought about that.”

Plus, she added of her gal pals, “They’re so fun but they’re so busy.”

When Taylor picks out a white dress, it’s going to be one to remember.

Ignoring the cost of her clothes and jewelry, the singer’s style is effortlessly chic and approachable. She favors timeless looks with a modern edge, often choosing designs from established brands like Oscar de la Renta, Elie Saab, Louis Vuitton, Zuhair Murad, and J. Mendel – designers she’s worn for years.

As a lifestyle expert, I can just picture it: after saying ‘I do’ in a stunning gown, our 5’10” bride will definitely slip into something more comfortable – and dance-friendly! – to really let loose and enjoy the party all night long. It’s all about comfort and fun once the ceremony is over!

We’re excited to see how she incorporates the traditional wedding elements – something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue – into her look.

Even wedding dress designer Vera Wang anticipates Taylor Swift will wear multiple outfits, and specifically, something with lace.

Travis is also into fashion, so he’s excited to choose a wedding suit that really expresses his personality.

He proposed while wearing shorts – it was a hot August day in Kansas! – and people online started jokingly challenging him to wear equally fashionable shorts for his wedding. However, he probably wouldn’t want to make such a bold fashion statement and risk overshadowing his partner, who will be wearing a beautiful dress.

Although, if showing off his knees was important to him…

In a 2012 interview with Cosmopolitan, Taylor Swift clarified she hadn’t already chosen a tuxedo for her future husband, explaining, “I want him to feel like his presence truly matters.”

Taylor and Travis both value family immensely, so their parents and brothers will definitely be important guests at the wedding. Jason Kelce, likely to be Travis’s best man, shares two young daughters, Wyatt and Elliotte, with his wife Kylie. Depending on the wedding date, their younger sister Bennett might also be a flower girl. However, the youngest, baby Finnley, will probably be too young to participate.

It will be interesting to see which of Travis Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs teammates are invited, but he was a groomsman at Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Mahomes’ wedding in 2022, so we know at least one teammate – and coach Andy Reid – will be there. Plus, he’s maintained a close group of friends from his high school days in Cleveland Heights, so his bachelor party, filled with golf and drinks, is going to be a lot of fun.

Taylor Swift’s childhood friend, Abigail Anderson, has been a constant presence in her life. Though her group of friends has changed over time, Selena Gomez remains close, and Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are still part of her inner circle, despite recent rumors about a falling out due to the actress’ legal issues.

Also, Taylor is already a godmother to Blake and Ryan’s daughters, so she’s familiar with the role of a special helper in a wedding.

It’s easy to imagine a friend or family member getting ordained to lead the ceremony, but we doubt Flavor Flav will be the one doing it.

On the September 17th episode of the New Heights podcast, Travis shared his preference for live music, saying, “I think we’re just people who like bands.”

Ugh, we knew it, we’re so on the same page.

Let’s be real, even if the bride decides to skip performing herself, she’s surrounded by incredibly talented friends who can definitely hold a microphone! I’m especially hoping to see Haim take the stage – they’re amazing!

But Taylor joked it “would be hard to keep” Ed Sheeran from performing at her wedding.

She explained in an October 2025 interview with Hits Radio that Ed has a natural drive to perform. ‘He’s someone who will always take the stage if given the chance,’ she said, adding that he understands his audience and aims to please them.

Taylor may love Travis so much she’d marry him with paper rings, but that won’t be the case.

If Travis continues to play sports, he might switch to a flexible wedding band, but for now, he’s set with the Old Mine Brilliant Cut diamond he chose for his fiancée – a ring created by Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine Jewelry.

The ring has a long, central diamond with smaller diamonds on either side. It’s made of yellow gold with a unique, custom engraving and perfectly complements the $27,300 Cartier watch he used when proposing.

Just how massive will this white veil occasion be?

Taylor Swift shared on The Graham Norton Show in October that she preferred not to deal with the pressure of deciding who to exclude from her guest list. She explained that making those cuts would force her to carefully consider and judge her relationships with people.

And, she added, “I’m not gonna do that.”

Comedian Nikki Glaser, a self-proclaimed Taylor Swift fan, believes a large wedding is coming for the singer. She told TopMob News at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards, “Everything seems to be building towards it.”

The comedian pointed out that because Taylor Swift is constantly in the spotlight – essentially treated like a bride every day – her wedding will probably be kept very private.

Nikki said she knows the person just wants to share the happy occasion with everyone they care about, as they have a large circle of friends and family. She jokingly predicted that someone will likely try to disrupt the celebration by taking annoying photos from a helicopter overhead.

As soon as the wedding is over and the couple drives off, Taylor will definitely begin sharing photos and videos from her wedding with her fans.
