Square Enix has suggested that a beloved game from the last ten years will get a continuation, likely a new installment. The company has released many popular and critically acclaimed titles recently, including Final Fantasy VII Remake/Rebirth, Dragon Quest 11, and Octopath Traveler, making it a very successful period for them. Now, they’re hinting that another well-received game may be getting a sequel or follow-up.
This week, Square Enix announced that Nier: Automata has reached a significant milestone: 10 million copies sold worldwide. This is a remarkable achievement, as few action RPGs like Automata ever reach this level of success. The game’s prequel, Nier: Replicant ver.1.22474487139, has also performed well, selling 2 million copies.
Although sales figures aren’t usually newsworthy, Square Enix also hinted at what’s next for the Nier series. At the end of their recent video (available below), they displayed a simple message: “Nier: Automata to be continued.” While they didn’t share any specific details, this strongly suggests that a new game or sequel related to Automata is in development.
This Square Enix Sequel Would Make a Lot of Sense
It’s easy to see why Square Enix might be planning a sequel to Nier: Automata. The first game was a big financial hit, so a follow-up would make good business sense. Plus, PlatinumGames, the game’s developer, hasn’t released a large, self-funded project since Bayonetta 3 in 2022. This makes it quite possible they’re currently working on a new Nier game.
It’s important to remember that Square Enix hasn’t actually confirmed they’re making a new Nier: Automata game. When they say the series will continue, that could mean a lot of things – like a TV show, movie, or even a series of books based on the Nier universe. So, until a new game is officially announced, this hint could be about something completely different.
