People still love revisiting familiar stories, which is why we’re seeing so many sequels to older movies. Studios are always eager to build on popular franchises by returning to well-known worlds. While some of these sequels are better than others, Twisters, released in the summer of 2024, has been a strong success. Starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell, it received positive reviews and did well in theaters. Now, almost two years later, it’s finding a new audience on streaming services.
From February 8th to 15th, the movie Twisters ranked as the eighth most popular title on Netflix worldwide. It garnered 3.1 million views and a total of 6.4 million hours of watch time. Twisters just trailed Russell Crowe’s Noah in the top 10, but outperformed films like Homefront and Norbit. This marked the first week Twisters appeared in Netflix’s top 10.
Why Twisters Is a Streaming Hit on Netflix

It’s become common for movies that didn’t do well in theaters to find fans on streaming services, as it’s easy for viewers to try something new from the comfort of their homes. But the 1996 film Twisters is different. It was both a box office success, earning $372.3 million worldwide on a $155 million budget, and well-received by critics. In fact, Rotten Tomatoes certifies it as “Fresh” with a 75% score from almost 400 reviews, and audiences even liked it more, giving it a 90% rating.
Positive buzz has probably led people to stream Twisters, and it’s easy to understand why. The movie feels like the big, exciting blockbusters of the past, capturing the heart of the original Twister but with updated, impressive special effects. It’s a genuinely fun watch – the tornado scenes are visually spectacular, and the competitive relationship between the storm chasers played by Edgar-Jones and Powell provides a compelling and emotional story. The two actors share great chemistry, creating characters that are both relatable and fit the classic blockbuster mold.
I really appreciated how much I could just enjoy Twisters without needing to have seen the first movie! So many legacy sequels rely too much on what came before, which can leave new viewers feeling lost. But Twisters felt fresh – it told its own complete story with a brand new group of characters, while still giving a fun nod to the original. It’s honestly one of the most welcoming legacy sequels I’ve seen in a long time. As a Netflix subscriber, I could simply hit play and lose myself in a thrilling disaster movie, and it was great to see some exciting new talent on screen.
Glen Powell is quickly becoming a major draw for moviegoers, especially those browsing Netflix. Following successful roles in films like Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone But You, he’s been steadily gaining popularity. While not every movie he’s in is a blockbuster like Twisters or Anyone But You, his films often perform well on streaming services – for example, The Running Man was an instant hit. With his new dark comedy, How to Make a Killing, attracting attention, many viewers will likely seek out his other work, including Twisters.
Currently, the movie Twisters is streaming on Netflix in countries outside of the United States. If you’re in the US, you can watch it on Peacock or rent or buy it through digital platforms like Apple and Amazon.
