Daniel Radcliffe Definitively Reveals Why He Won’t Play The MCU’s Wolverine

Hugh Jackman has become incredibly well-known for playing Wolverine, starting with the first X-Men film. While he recently appeared in the hit Deadpool & Wolverine and might return for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, his time as the superhero may be coming to a close. After Secret Wars, Marvel Studios plans to start a new storyline focusing on the mutants from the upcoming X-Men reboot. This fresh start likely means they’ll recast Wolverine, and many fans have been suggesting potential actors. Sadly, one popular choice has now said they’re not interested in the role.

So, I was chatting with ComicBook about this whole thing with fans wanting me to play Wolverine in the MCU, and it was never actually a possibility. Honestly, it started as just a fun internet rumor, which I was totally flattered by! But nobody with the power to cast me even brought it up. Look, of course I’d consider something like that, but following Hugh Jackman as Wolverine? No thanks! He owns that role, it’s his most iconic, and I’m perfectly happy letting him keep it. It’s not on my list of things to do, that’s for sure.

Radcliffe admitted he isn’t very familiar with the current state of Marvel movies and would need to get up to speed if he ever considered joining one. However, he’s definitely open to the possibility. He isn’t actively seeking a role in a comic book movie, but he wouldn’t rule it out. Ultimately, he chooses projects based on the script, and if one was compelling, unique, and creatively interesting, he’d be happy to be involved, regardless of the genre.

Hugh Jackman Makes Recasting Wolverine Complicated for Marvel Studios

It’s easy to see why Daniel Radcliffe doesn’t want to play Wolverine. The next actor in the role will inevitably be compared to Hugh Jackman, which isn’t a great position to be in. Jackman has been a hugely popular Wolverine for over twenty years, and the longer he continues, the harder it will be for Marvel to find someone new. It’s likely other actors feel the same way as Radcliffe and are hesitant to take on such an iconic role after him. This could make it more difficult for Marvel to find the right person for the part.

It might have felt more conclusive if Logan had been Hugh Jackman’s last time playing Wolverine. That 2017 film provided a strong ending to his portrayal of the character, and a longer break would have allowed audiences to anticipate a fresh take on Wolverine with Secret Wars. However, with Jackman potentially continuing in the role throughout the Multiverse Saga, that necessary time between appearances is shrinking. The upcoming X-Men reboot is currently expected in 2028, just a year after Secret Wars, meaning Jackman’s Wolverine—if he appears in the Avengers films—will still be very present in viewers’ memories.

Rumors are circulating that Marvel might keep Hugh Jackman as Wolverine even after Phase 6, possibly as a mentor in the upcoming X-Men reboot. This would make finding a new actor to play the role incredibly difficult. One solution could be to make Dafne Keen’s character, X-23, the new lead. Keen, who first appeared with Jackman in Logan, quickly became popular with fans, and many would love to see her star in her own X-Men movie. Instead of recasting Wolverine, focusing on X-23 would allow for a new storyline and a fresh take on the reboot.

Since finishing the Harry Potter films in 2011, Daniel Radcliffe has mostly avoided big franchise movies. While he’s been in films like Now You See Me 2, Swiss Army Man, and The Lost City, he’s generally kept a lower profile over the last fifteen years. This might be why he isn’t rushing to join a superhero movie – he seems content with Harry Potter being his main blockbuster role and is focusing on other interesting acting projects. However, Marvel and DC are still making compelling films with talented directors, so a role could eventually pique his interest. He might be particularly drawn to a character no one has played before, allowing him to create his own unique interpretation without comparisons to previous actors.
