Netflix’s ‘Godless’ Is the Perfect Western for Taylor Sheridan Fans Waiting for the Next ‘Yellowstone’ Spin-Off

Taylor Sheridan fans, having repeatedly watched all of his shows – Yellowstone, 1883, 1923, Landman, and Spec Ops: Lioness – are now searching for something new to watch. Sheridan has successfully revived the western genre on television, with Yellowstone being a standout neo-western and 1923 and 1883 paying homage to classic westerns. However, since the genre’s popularity declined years ago, finding similar shows is difficult. Luckily, Netflix has a hidden gem: one of the greatest western TV series ever made.

This seven-part series delivers everything a Western fan could hope for: a tough struggle to build lives in a harsh land, frequent and intense gunfights, and the constant threat of disease and outlaws. While the Western genre can be bleak, this series really shines. The characters are as well-developed as those in Taylor Sheridan’s 1883, and the cast is fantastic, featuring Jack O’Connell (from Sinners) and Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom). Overall, it’s one of the best Western series available.

The Netflix series Godless, which premiered in 2017, didn’t get much attention at the time, despite launching shortly after the massive success of Stranger Things. It’s a shame, really, because many viewers who have seen it consider Godless to be even better. With only seven episodes, it’s a perfect show to binge in a weekend – or even in a single day if you need an excuse to skip work (and honestly, who hasn’t?). If you’re a fan of Taylor Sheridan (the creator of Yellowstone) and are eagerly awaiting his next show, Godless is definitely worth checking out. You won’t regret it.

‘Godless’ Feels Like a Hollywood-Budget Western

Taylor Sheridan’s western shows are impressive because of their grand scale. Typically, TV shows have much smaller budgets than major movies, but Sheridan consistently delivers visually stunning productions. This is particularly remarkable considering westerns are already an expensive genre to film. Compared to his work, the show Godless seems low-budget.

The series Godless takes place in the isolated mining town of Liberty Bell. Following a devastating mine collapse that wiped out most of the town’s men, the women are left to survive on their own. Their fragile peace is shattered when they unknowingly shelter a wanted outlaw, bringing a dangerous gang down on them. The women must then decide whether to hand over the charming fugitive or fight to protect their town from his relentless pursuers. Jack O’Connell gives a standout performance as Roy Goode, well before his roles in Sinners, 28 Years Later, and SAS Rogue Heroes brought him wider recognition.
