Get ready, monster fans! The popular Apple TV+ series based on the Monsterverse—which critics loved, giving it an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes—returns for its second season in just five days. That means you only have to wait less than a week for more thrilling action and epic monster fights, and Kurt and Wyatt Russell are back as father and son!
The new series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, features Anna Sawai, Kurt Russell, and Ren Watanabe. It begins in 2015, a year after Godzilla’s return and destructive battle in San Francisco. Siblings Cate and Kentaro Randa are searching for answers about their missing father and his ties to a secret organization that studies colossal creatures called Titans (also known as MUTOs). The show also flashes back to the past, revealing the origins of this organization – Monarch – and the work of scientists Bill Randa and Keiko Miura.
Monarch is a Series With a Ton of Heart
“Monarch” delivers the enjoyable elements fans expect from giant monster stories, but it also focuses on the human relationships between the characters, making it surprisingly relatable. The show takes a risk by prioritizing these human stories, and the actors deliver fantastic performances. Though it occasionally slows down, “Monarch” is consistently engaging and captivating. Ultimately, the series is more about its characters than the monster battles themselves. As critic Rohan Nahaar points out, it’s less like the action-filled MonsterVerse movies and more like a sweeping family saga, similar to Apple TV+’s “Pachinko.”
Despite being a bit smaller in scope than the Monsterverse films, Monarch still delivers thrilling battles between colossal creatures with impressive special effects. The series manages to blend horror, humor, and even romance while exploring surprisingly complex themes. As Belen Edwards from Mashable puts it, the show remains captivating thanks to its detailed world and fantastic monsters, even when focusing on the human stories within it.
