I’m really excited that The Hunt is finally getting released! It’s a revenge thriller with Benoît Magimel, and the trailer just dropped after a pretty strange delay – apparently there was some behind-the-scenes drama that held things up. The basic premise is two groups of people end up hunting each other, and it looks like it gets seriously intense as mistrust and the desire for revenge take over.
After concerns arose about potential plagiarism, the French drama series The Hunt (originally titled Traqués) was temporarily removed from its planned December 25th release. Now, three months later, the studio Gaumont has addressed the issue. Following accusations that The Hunt closely resembles the 1973 novel Shoot by the late Douglas Fairbairn, the series’ credits have been updated.
Details about The Hunt were briefly taken down from Apple TV’s website but have since been put back up. It’s now scheduled for release on March 4, 2026, and the credits have been updated to say it’s “a series by Anger” based on the novel Shoot by Douglas Fairbairn. Shoot was previously made into a film of the same name, directed by Harvey Hart and written by Richard Berg. You can find a statement from Gaumont below.
The movie The Hunt, initially planned for release in December 2025, was delayed after it came to light in November 2025 that it borrowed heavily from an existing work called Shoot by Douglas Fairbairn. The film had been presented as an original creation.
Once Gaumont, the producer of the series, learned of this issue, they quickly worked to find the copyright owners and get permission to use the material.
Gaumont believes protecting creative work and the rights of its creators is essential, and this can only happen when artists trust us and we’re open and honest with them.
What Is ‘The Hunt’ All About?
I just saw the tagline for this new movie, The Hunt, and it really stuck with me: “The most dangerous enemy is the one you can’t see.” It stars a lot of actors I recognize, like Damien Bonnard, Benoît Magimel, and Mélanie Laurent. From what I understand, it’s directed by Cédric Anger and Guillaume Renusson, and it sounds incredibly intense. It’s about a group of people being hunted, but they have no idea why – which is super unsettling! I’m definitely intrigued and want to find out more about the story.
Franck and his close friends have a tradition of weekend hunting trips. But one Sunday, they’re suddenly attacked by another group of hunters for no apparent reason. After one of them is shot, Franck’s friends defend themselves, and they manage to escape. They decide to keep the incident quiet, but Franck soon feels like they’re being watched—or even hunted—by those seeking revenge. He tries to return to normal life with his wife, Krystel, but the feeling of being tracked persists.
Apple has cancelled and revived shows before. For example, the crime thriller The Savant, starring Jessica Chastain, was put on hold because parts of its storyline resembled the real-life murder of Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist. Now, The Hunt has overcome similar issues and will premiere on Apple’s streaming service on March 4th. New episodes will be released each week through April 1st.
