Scarlett Johansson’s Apple Original, Fly Me to the Moon, Is Heading to a New Streamer

Honestly, as a movie fan, I think Scarlett Johansson absolutely crushes every role she takes on. The New York native is so versatile – she’s equally amazing in huge action flicks like that Jurassic World reboot and those Marvel Cinematic Universe films, but then she turns around and delivers a really moving performance in smaller, more personal movies like her recent one, Fly Me to the Moon. She just seems to nail everything she does.

However, not all projects are successful. For example, a Tony Award-winning show initially received a very poor reaction in theaters and ultimately became a significant financial failure for Sony Pictures.

The movie earned only $42 million globally in theaters, opening with just $9.4 million in the US and Canada. This was significantly less than its production cost, which exceeded $100 million (and doesn’t include marketing expenses). The studio is now trying to recoup losses through digital rentals and streaming. Starting March 1st, the film will be available to stream on Starz.

Though Fly Me to the Moon didn’t perform well in theaters, it’s likely to be popular on Starz. Viewers gave it a high rating of 89% based on over 1,000 reviews, though critics were less impressed, giving it a 66% rating.

Fly Me to the Moon Didn’t Blast Off In Theaters

Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum star in a new film set in the mid-1900s, around the time of the Apollo 11 moon landing. The movie also features cameos from stars like Ryan Reynolds (appearing in scenes from Deadpool & Wolverine, 21 Jump Street, Magic Mike, and Blink Twice). The story follows the conflict between Johansson’s character, Kelly Jones – a marketing expert brought in to boost NASA’s public image – and Tatum’s character, Cole Davis, the NASA launch director, as they clash over how to improve the agency’s reputation when public opinion is low.

Fly Me to the Moon was a film Johannson told The Kelly Clarkson Show she fought to have made.

She’s reached a point in her career where she hopes studios will consider projects with completely new ideas, rather than relying on existing stories. She understands that filmmaking is costly and risky, and studios naturally want to repeat successes. However, she’s determined to champion original stories and believes that bringing fresh ideas to the screen is something she can uniquely contribute whenever possible.

Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum Launch Into Starz

The acclaimed actress then explained why Fly Me to the Moon‘s script attracted her so strongly.

Johansson explained that the film started with a fresh idea and a fantastic script by Rose Gilroy, who comes from a family of skilled screenwriters. She loved that the concept felt both original and nostalgic, reminding her of movies like Catch Me If You Can. It felt like a rare find – a genuinely fun, lively, witty, romantic, and heartwarming story.

When Fly Me to the Moon starts streaming on Starz, a wider audience will get a chance to see what many viewers already know: this movie, despite not doing well in theaters, is actually quite good.
