Hollywood seems to constantly remake horror movies, often reviving franchises even when previous attempts haven’t been successful. Take The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, for example – it’s been rebooted three times recently, with each new version being less well-received than the last. Now, A24 is even planning both a movie and a TV series to bring the series back again. Despite these repeated failures, horror remakes can still be a good bet because of the dedicated fans and the occasional unexpected success.
A remake of the horror film American Psycho has been in development for two years, but it’s currently stalled. Director Luca Guadagnino and Lionsgate are having trouble finding an actor to play the lead role. Author Bret Easton Ellis shared on his podcast that several well-known actors have declined the part, possibly because they don’t want to be compared to Christian Bale‘s iconic performance.
American Psycho Remake Can’t Find a Lead Actor for Iconic Character

Christian Bale first gained recognition in films like Empire of the Sun and Newsies, but he truly became a major star with his role in American Psycho. In the movie, directed by Mary Harron, Bale demonstrated an impressive range of emotions and nuanced acting, perfectly capturing the complex and disturbing double life of Patrick Bateman. The role demanded incredible versatility – one moment he’d be intensely focused during a business meeting, the next cheerfully talking about music while preparing a crime scene, and then running naked with a chainsaw. His performance solidified his status as a leading man.
Finding the right actor for this role is tough. It demands a wide range of skills, and whoever takes it will inevitably be compared to a very famous previous performance. Most young actors in Hollywood probably don’t want to constantly be asked about that comparison or see endless reviews analyzing it. Unlike iconic characters like Batman or the Joker, where there are many interpretations, this role has one definitive portrayal in the public’s mind. Fortunately, Patrick Schwarzenegger has expressed interest in playing the part.
I’ve been following the news about the new American Psycho adaptation, and I recently heard something interesting from the writer, Ellis. Apparently, this version is going to be completely different from the 2000 film – he says it won’t resemble it at all! Knowing Luca Guadagnino’s work, that doesn’t entirely shock me, but it does make me wonder why they’re struggling to find the right actor. There was talk of Austin Butler being considered, then Jacob Elordi’s name came up, but as of now, they still haven’t cast Patrick Bateman. Still, it sounds like the remake is definitely still happening, and I’m really curious to see what they do with it.
