Chris Pratt has had a mixed run lately. Though he’s voiced popular characters in the successful films The Super Mario Bros. Movie and The Garfield Movie, his recent on-screen acting projects haven’t done as well. Critics didn’t like The Electric State on Netflix, and his latest film, Mercy, also received negative reviews and didn’t make much money. Despite these recent setbacks, Pratt has starred in some very successful films in the past, including a well-known but divisive sci-fi hit that will soon be available on Hulu.
The movie Passengers, starring Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence (known for The Hunger Games), arrives on Hulu on February 28th. The film follows two passengers on a spaceship traveling to a distant colony, who are accidentally woken up 90 years too early from their hibernation. Though reviews were mixed, Pratt and Lawrence both received strong praise for their acting, and the movie earned over $300 million in theaters.
Passengers Is a Sci-Fi Romance With a Very Problematic Story

Passengers is often labeled a sci-fi romance, but it’s a problematic one, which explains the strong reactions it gets. The story isn’t just about two people waking up early on a long space voyage. Jim awakens prematurely due to a malfunction, and is unable to go back to sleep. A year later, he finds Aurora and, knowing she won’t be able to return to hibernation if he wakes her, decides to do so anyway, effectively taking away her agency and the life she intended to live.
Things get even more complicated when Jim wakes Aurora and deliberately makes her believe the situation is just a simple technical error, like what happened to him. She’s understandably furious when she learns the truth. Later, after a dangerous incident, they discover a single hibernation pod on the ship, offering Aurora a way to return to the life she lost by going back to sleep. However, she ultimately chooses to stay with Jim. Despite the film’s stunning visuals and strong performances, it’s difficult to ignore the unsettling and problematic lack of consent at the beginning of their relationship.
Even though the film received mixed reviews, it was a commercial success for stars Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence. It also earned two Oscar nominations: for Best Original Score and Best Production Design. Now, ten years after its initial release and with its upcoming availability on Hulu at the end of the month, it will be interesting to see how audiences rediscover it.
