Why The Night Agent Season 3 Killed Off Catherine

Be warned, major spoilers ahead for season 3 of The Night Agent! The latest season of this thrilling Netflix spy series is full of action and suspense. Early in the season, a shocking death deeply impacts the Night Action team, and the second episode ends with a major character – Peter Sutherland’s closest ally – being killed.

This season of The Night Agent features several character deaths, but the death of Catherine Weaver, played by Amanda Warren, was particularly shocking. Throughout season two, Catherine served as Peter’s handler, and they were starting to form a close relationship when she was unexpectedly killed.

Amanda Warren, a significant cast member in season 3 of The Night Agent, was surprised to learn her character would be killed off after only two episodes. However, the show’s producers and writers had important reasons for making the difficult decision to remove Catherine from the story.

How Catherine Dies In The Night Agent Season 3

In the second episode of The Night Agent season 3, titled “Package Deal”, Catherine Weaver is killed during an operation to capture Jacob Monroe. She approaches a car believing Monroe, Peter, and Jay Batra are inside, but it’s actually a trap set by Monroe – the vehicle is filled with explosives.

The bomb explodes the moment the door opens, instantly killing Catherine. After escaping Monroe, Peter discovers Catherine’s body as FBI supervisor Aiden Mosley frantically tries to contact her on the radio. This shocking turn of events will significantly change the outcome of the story for Peter Sutherland in The Night Agent when the series concludes.

Catherine’s Death Pushes Peter To Become More Self-Sufficient In The Night Agent

Last year, Catherine seemed to create challenges for Peter in season two of The Night Agent. However, her recent death is a major setback for his work with the Night Action team. The show’s creators intentionally wrote her character out, pushing Peter to become more self-reliant and take on more responsibility.

Shawn Ryan, the show’s executive producer, recently shared with TV Insider that everyone involved – including actress Amanda Warren – agreed with the way Catherine’s story ended. Removing Warren’s character so dramatically increases the tension and challenges for Peter as the third season of The Night Agent continues.

Does Night Action Still Exist By The End Of The Night Agent Season 3?

The future of Netflix’s hit action series, The Night Agent, is uncertain. At the close of the third season, Peter Sutherland requests a long break, suggesting a delay in the show’s return. Adding to this, the show’s supervisor, Aidan Mosley, stated he is dismantling Peter’s team, further indicating a potential pause in production.

It seems like when The Night Agent comes back, we can expect a completely new team of intelligence operatives. The familiar action and storylines we’ve seen so far might not continue in the same way.

So, it sounds like Mosley is hinting to Peter that he’s thinking of pairing him up with someone new. But the good news for me – and other fans, I’m sure – is that Gabriel Basso is definitely coming back as the Night Agent. They’re not leaving him out of the picture, that’s for sure!
