The action thriller Reacher on Prime Video is already a hit, and with its successful format and strong viewership, it has the potential to run for many years. The show is adapted from the popular book series written by Lee Child.
The novels featuring Jack Reacher were previously turned into two Tom Cruise films, but fans weren’t particularly impressed. This new Reacher show is a much more accurate and gritty adaptation, capturing the intense action and violence of the books. Plus, Alan Ritchson, who plays Reacher, physically embodies the character as described in the novels far better than previous portrayals.
So far, there are 30 Jack Reacher novels, and the TV series has covered three of them – adapting one book per season to stay true to the original stories. While a spin-off show focuses on another character, the main Reacher series is directly based on the novels.
Reacher Has Cracked The Formula For A Successful Action Series
The show Reacher appears to have figured out how to keep viewers engaged across seasons. While Alan Ritchson’s compelling performance as the lead is a major draw, the show also succeeds with its clear storylines and consistently building suspense.
Jack Reacher is a former soldier who travels the country using his training to fight crime and expose corruption. Each season of the show features a new location and a new set of bad guys, which keeps things interesting while still delivering the action and themes fans expect.
Even though the romantic interest from the first season of Reacher is still the show’s strongest supporting character, each season introduces memorable new faces that keep the series exciting and unpredictable. And while Reacher is incredibly strong and resourceful, making him hard to defeat, the villains in each season always provide a real challenge.
Because each season of Reacher features a self-contained story, the show can continue to develop Alan Ritchson’s character without needing a lot of returning faces. This format is great for viewers – you can easily jump in at any season without feeling lost – while still building a richer, more detailed world with each installment.
How Many Reacher Books Are Left For The Show To Cover
It’s not surprising that the Reacher TV show began by adapting the first Jack Reacher novel, Killing Floor. This 1997 book, which features a story about police corruption in Margrave, Georgia, served as the basis for the show’s first season. Season two, however, drew its story from Bad Luck and Trouble, the fourteenth book in the series, published in 2007.
Interestingly, the show decided to tell the story of season 3 using the plot from the 2003 novel, Persuader, which is the 11th book in the Reacher series. This still leaves plenty of material for future seasons, with 26 books remaining to adapt, though two may not be adapted at all. Notably, the 2005 novel One Shot (the 12th book) was already made into the 2012 film Jack Reacher.
The Tom Cruise movie Jack Reacher got a sequel in 2016 called Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, which was based on the twentieth book in the Reacher series, also titled Never Go Back. However, the current TV show probably won’t cover this story, as the events appear to happen between the second and third seasons.
This isn’t a major change to the established story, but it probably means we won’t see another screen version of Never Go Back. The show would have to jump back in time between the current and next seasons to cover the book’s plot, and that would be unnecessarily confusing when there are plenty of other Reacher novels they could adapt instead.
With 25 existing Reacher novels to choose from, the show has plenty of material for future seasons. Even if we exclude the novel already adapted as a movie (One Shot), there are still 24 books available. This is fantastic news for Amazon Prime Video, fans of the series, and the Reacher franchise as a whole, as it suggests the show could run for many years.
Reacher Could Become Prime Video’s New Bosch
The original Reacher show has been a big success, and now it has the potential to become a whole franchise. Similar to how Prime Video turned Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan into a hit series and then a movie, Reacher could also get a spin-off film starring Alan Ritchson.
The show has already led to a spin-off series called Neagley, and a fourth season is on the way. With smart planning, the creators could expand this into a large and connected fictional world, similar to the Bosch universe.
The show Bosch ran for seven seasons and then continued with a sequel, Bosch: Legacy, which led to another spin-off called Ballard. A prequel, Bosch: Start of Watch, is also on the way. While this is a lot of content stemming from one show, Reacher may be on track to achieve the same level of expansion.
