The Toy Story movies are intentionally designed with a changing cast. Each film introduces new villains who don’t return, and the story often involves toys being discarded or lost, leading to supporting characters disappearing between installments. We’ve already seen characters like Wheezy, Barbie and Ken (who remained at Sunnyside in Toy Story 3), Lenny the binoculars, RC the car, Chuckles the clown, and Evil Emperor Zurg leave the series. Toy Story 5 will continue this trend, with some familiar faces not returning.
So far, Toy Story 5 has replaced four actors, and it looks like Jeff Garlin might be among them – he’s missing from the list of returning cast members, despite appearing briefly in the trailer. While his role was likely small anyway, especially with so many new characters (including multiple Buzz Lightyears), it’s not confirmed. Several other actors from Toy Story 4 aren’t currently listed as returning, and while some late additions are possible, it seems some characters won’t be back, either because their story has ended or due to practical reasons. Here’s a rundown of the characters we likely won’t see in Toy Story 5…
These Toy Story 4 Returns Are Still Possible…
7. Keegan-Michael Key as Ducky & Jordan Peele as Bunny
Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele brought a lot of laughs to Toy Story 4 as the carnival prizes Ducky and Bunny. They joined Bo Peep’s team of ‘lost toys,’ helping reunite toys with their kids, and stayed with her when Woody decided to do the same. While Bo Peep and Keanu Reeves’ Duke Kaboom are confirmed to return for Toy Story 5, there’s been no news about Ducky and Bunny. They might make an appearance, but it’s also possible they’ve finally found their own happy ending with a child and a home.
6. Ally Maki as Giggle McDimples

Bo Peep will be back in Toy Story 5, though it might be a short appearance, as Annie Potts is confirmed to return. However, her toy sidekick, Giggle McDimples, isn’t currently listed among the returning characters. Ally Maki, who voiced Giggle McDimples, has said she’d love to reprise her role, but so far, she – along with the characters Ducky and Bunny – haven’t been confirmed for the film. It’s possible they’ll appear in the beginning, before Woody meets Bonnie’s toys again, but this hasn’t been officially confirmed.
These Toy Story 4 Character Returns Are Unlikely…
5. John Morris as Andy (& Laurie Metcalf as His Mom)

Andy is growing up, and John Mason, who used to own Woody and Buzz, is becoming an adult. While he might revisit his childhood toys later in life, like many people do, it’s unlikely he’ll be involved in the next movie because the story doesn’t require his character.
Similar to Andy’s appearance, Laurie Metcalf’s character, Mrs. Davis, only appears for a very short moment in a flashback in Toy Story 4. Both characters don’t have significant roles, and bringing them back for a fifth Toy Story movie would take away from the idea of Bonnie becoming the new main character, taking over from Andy.

4. Christina Hendricks as Gabby Gabby

Similar to Lotso in Toy Story 3, Gabby Gabby – voiced by Christina Hendricks of Mad Men – is a somewhat sad character whose actions stem from a deep need. While Lotso is more malicious, Gabby simply wants to be loved and tries to achieve this by taking Woody’s voice box to repair her own. By the end of Toy Story 4, she finds a new child to care for, making it highly unlikely she’ll ever return to the carnival or help Woody and his friends again.
3. Steve Purcell as Benson and The Dummies

Gabby Gabby’s dummy helpers, led by Benson, were a frightening and seemingly endless threat at the antique store, made even creepier by their constant, forced smiles. While Gabby Gabby herself found happiness, the Bensons – named after a member of the film’s creative team – didn’t have such a good outcome. The last we saw of one, he was accidentally scaring people at a fair, and may still be there! It’s a bit scary to think about, but it’s probably not something we need to revisit in a future Toy Story movie.
2. Mel Brooks as Melephant Brooks, Carol Burnett as Chairol Burnett & Alan Oppenheimer as Old Timer

Mel Brooks, the director of Spaceballs and a master of satire, Carol Burnett, a beloved comedian and star of Annie, and Alan Oppenheimer, a voice acting legend known for roles like Skeletor, all make appearances as toys that Bonnie has outgrown but hasn’t gotten rid of. Old Timer was first seen in the Pixar short Toy Story of Terror as a stolen item. These cameos are brief celebrations of these iconic performers, but with Bonnie getting older, it’s unlikely these forgotten toys will be featured in Toy Story 5.
Toy Story 4 Character Returns That Are Impossible:
1. Betty White as Bitey White & Carl Reiner as Carl Reineroceros

Along with Mel Brooks and Carol Burnett, comedy icons Betty White and Carl Reiner made appearances as characters in the world of toys: Bitey White, a tiger teething ring, and Carl Reineroceros, a pink rhino. Unfortunately, both White, who passed away in 2020, and Reiner, who died in 2021, are no longer with us, making a return in Toy Story 5 impossible. Because the characters’ names are based on the actors themselves, recasting would be both impractical and insensitive.
