Hilary Duff remembers a time she was perhaps slightly less than mature.
Singer Hilary Duff, who has been married to Matthew Koma for six years, says they almost never argue, usually only having one big disagreement each year.
Hilary recently told Dakota Fanning in an interview for Interview Magazine that her husband had commented on how long it had been since they’d argued. She said he asked if they were prepared for a fight, and she responded by asking if he was ready.
You know, I’ve seen this pattern so many times. It’s easy to blame the other person when a relationship ends, but sometimes, we have to be honest with ourselves. This woman, she finally admitted she wasn’t ready, and shared a really telling detail – during their last big fight, she actually threw his phone into a Bougainvillea bush! And honestly? She said it felt good. It’s a raw moment, and a reminder that sometimes, we act out of impulse, and that recognizing our own part in things is the first step to moving forward.
Hilary shared that the argument occurred while the family—daughters Banks, 7, Mae, 4, and Townes, 21 months, and son Luca, 13, whom she shares with her ex-husband, Mike Comrie—was already going through a tough time. They had recently lost their home in the 2025 Los Angeles fires.
“We just needed to have it out,” she said. “But we don’t usually fight.”
Matthew and Hilary Duff’s strong relationship extended to their work when Matthew became the producer for Hilary’s new album, Luck… or Something. Hilary felt especially comfortable and supported having him involved in the project.
It might sound cliché, but I love waking up and working alongside my team – we really support each other. For a long time, especially growing up in this business, I felt like I was doing everything on my own.

I remember Hilary saying that word, and it did sound a little silly, but she was determined to prove she could handle things. It honestly took her a long time to realize just how much help he offered and how much weight it lifted off her shoulders.
Additionally, Matthew’s exceptional talent convinced Hilary she wanted to collaborate solely with him.
She said she wanted it to be just the two of them. She explained that sharing honestly came naturally because he’s seen her life firsthand—both the hard parts and the happy moments—and those experiences have shaped who she is.
