Netflix rarely releases its original movies on Blu-ray. When they do, it’s almost always through the prestigious Criterion Collection. Films like The Irishman, Okja, Beasts of No Nation, The Power of the Dog, Marriage Story, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, and Roma were all critically acclaimed and received Criterion releases, and very few Netflix films are released outside of this distributor. Now, according to Variety, Netflix has two more movies joining the Criterion Collection soon.
Collectors of physical media will be happy to add Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein to their collections, right alongside Pinocchio. More unexpectedly, Netflix is letting Criterion release KPop Demon Hunters, one of their most popular shows.
When Might KPop Demon Hunters Be Released on Criterion & Is It Still Doing Well on Netflix?
There’s no confirmed release date for the 4K Blu-ray and standard Blu-ray versions yet, but you can still enjoy the popular animated film on Netflix. We’ll find out on March 15th if it wins an Academy Award – it’s nominated for both Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Golden.”
It’s not unexpected to see classic Oscar-winning films released by Criterion, so Frankenstein being included isn’t a surprise. However, many were surprised to see KPop get the same treatment. This isn’t due to the film’s quality – in fact, it’s still incredibly popular on Netflix, even after being available for nine months.
From February 9th to 15th, the title ranked fourth worldwide, following only Joe’s College Road Trip, The Investigation of Lucy Letby, and How to Train Your Dragon. Despite the upcoming Blu-ray release, it’s expected to remain very popular on Netflix, particularly as the release date for the awaited sequel approaches.
