Why Monarch Can’t Use Certain Toho Monsters, Revealed by Executive [Exclusive]

The Monsterverse is continuing with a second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and along with the return of Kong and Godzilla, a brand new Titan will be introduced, created specifically for the show. ComicBook recently spoke with Executive Producer Tory Tunnell about the possibility of including other classic monsters from Toho, and he explained why certain Titans haven’t appeared in this season.

When asked if certain Toho monsters were restricted to prevent conflicts with the movies, Tunnell explained that while there were some limitations, it wasn’t about being exclusive. The goal is to create a vast and expansive universe, and avoiding overlap with the films helps achieve that. Using the same monsters would make the world feel smaller.

Tunnell explained they’re constantly searching for fresh, untold stories and striving to present them in a compelling way. They also aim to connect new work with existing narratives, creating a unified and surprising experience that doesn’t feel overwhelming.

Monarch Is Introducing A Deadly New Titan, And It Might Even Frighten Godzilla

The new season of the Monarch series isn’t just bringing back Godzilla and Kong – it’s also introducing a powerful new Titan that could challenge even these two massive creatures.

Trailers have shown hints of a new monster called Titan X, but we haven’t seen its complete appearance or even learned its official name. This massive creature mostly stays hidden underwater and has several huge tentacles that appear powerful enough to challenge both Godzilla and Kong. While some viewers have noticed similarities to the monster Biollante, the filmmakers haven’t confirmed any connection.

Tunnell explained that the idea for this new Titan came about at the very beginning of the current season. Introducing this creature not only adds something new to the Monsterverse, but also opens up opportunities to delve into previously unexplored territory and backstory.

That’s a great question! We weren’t happy with the initial auditions for Mothra. Ultimately, we wanted to do something fresh and surprise the audience by showing this Titan exploring parts of the world we hadn’t seen before. We also wanted Mothra to have a unique personality. Like all good sci-fi and horror monsters, we see these creatures as a powerful reflection of the human experience.

Tunnell explained that monsters often symbolize the anxieties we face about things beyond our control. For this season, the monster is specifically designed to fit the story they’ve created, and it felt essential that this particular Titan be the central threat.

Although the new monster is the main attraction, expect to see quick glimpses or teases of other familiar Toho creatures and characters. While Jet Jaguar and Hedorah aren’t likely to appear right away, the Monsterverse has already introduced exciting new Titans like the Skar King, so fans are hoping Titan X will be just as impressive.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 will air starting February 27th on Apple TV.
