Kate Hudson Reveals One Rule Goldie Hawn & Kurt Russell Raised Her By

If Kate Hudson wanted to be almost famous, she had to do it on her own.

Although raised by well-known actors Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, actress Kate Hudson—and her brother, Oliver Hudson—didn’t receive any special treatment or financial assistance growing up.

Kate shared on the February 19th episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast that she had a very different upbringing than many kids she knew growing up in Los Angeles. While some of her peers had parents who provided for their every need, her own parents took a different approach.

Growing up, we definitely had a lot of advantages,” she explained. “But my parents were firm about the fact that those benefits weren’t something we deserved simply by birthright. They made it clear that if we wanted to maintain the lifestyle we had, we’d need to work hard and earn it ourselves – that nothing would be handed to us.

Even though many of her friends received help from their parents, Kate understood and embraced her own parents’ way of thinking.

She remembered thinking, ‘I’m going to be completely independent and won’t depend on my parents.’ She was determined to succeed on her own merits and didn’t want anyone to associate her success with them.

Kate, whose father is musician Bill Hudson, was determined to establish her own identity. She was actually pleased when people didn’t automatically link her to her famous mother, Goldie Hawn, and stepfather, Kurt Russell. She even felt grateful her last name was Hudson when she was starting out, as it allowed her to build a name for herself independently.

Although she always prioritized forging her own career, the Almost Famous actress acknowledges she benefited from being raised around filmmaking, even though her parents had firm rules about being on set.

She explained that everyone on set needed to either contribute by working, actively help out, or make sure they weren’t in the way. Simply being present wasn’t enough.

Kate admitted she recognizes how fortunate she was growing up. She had a unique opportunity to experience the wonder of the entertainment industry as a child, witnessing the hard work that brings it to life.

Oh my gosh, Kate and Goldie? Their connection is just everything. It’s not just those sweet childhood visits to movie sets, you guys. It’s a real mother-daughter thing, and I’ve been collecting all the adorable moments – prepare to swoon!

Kate Hudson said in 2016 that she’s always shared a very open and honest relationship with her mother. She’s never felt the need to keep anything from her, and considers her a trusted confidante.

Goldie recently shared in an interview with TopMob News that she’s learned a lot from Kate. She explained that Kate is remarkably strong when working with children, even more so than Goldie herself felt she was. Goldie also emphasized Kate’s honesty, saying it’s crucial to accept the truth, even when it’s difficult.

At the 2018 SAG Awards, Kate shared with TopMob News how her mother, Goldie, has influenced her life. She explained that her mom taught her the importance of compassion, kindness, and prioritizing family. Kate believes that how we raise our children is the most meaningful thing we can leave behind, and that ultimately, everything we do is for the love of family.

Growing up with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell as my parents was amazing. It really was a childhood that set us all up well – we’re a super close family. Even with how busy Mom was with her career, she was always there for us, a really present and involved parent.

Kate Hudson, known for her role in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, helped her mother get ready for the 2018 SAG Awards, adjusting her outfit before they presented an award together on stage.

During their Hollywood Walk of Fame star unveiling in May 2017, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell’s daughter shared how their greatest achievement wasn’t their careers, but the strong, loving family they built together. She described the deep connection and unwavering support they’ve always provided, emphasizing that family is what truly matters to them.

“Grateful #MamaGoldie,” Hudson captioned this snapshot on a hike with her mom.

Even Kate Hudson’s 14-year-old son, Ryder Robinson, is incredibly proud of his mother and grandmother. He told TopMob News at a Hawn Foundation event, “It’s really cool and inspiring. I’m so proud of Gogo and my mom.”
