From the start, Star Trek has always been about discovering new things – it’s right there in the iconic opening line, promising the Enterprise would go where nobody had gone before. In those early days of the Federation, Captain Kirk and his crew were on a five-year mission to explore the unknown, meaning they never knew what kind of alien they would encounter each week. Entire civilizations and empires were still a mystery; the discovery that the Romulans and Vulcans were related was a big surprise, for example.
I’ve always loved how the world of Star Trek evolved. It was neat seeing how things changed from the original series. At first, learning about new aliens felt like a real discovery, but by The Next Generation, Captain Picard could just ask the computer for information! Things became pretty well-mapped out, and it took something big like a wormhole – like in Voyager – to really throw the crew into the unknown again, sending Janeway’s ship way off into a new part of the galaxy. But honestly? I think we’re in a golden age now, in the 33rd century, with mysteries and possibilities opening up everywhere – it’s more exciting than ever!
The Galaxy Has Changed Completely Because of the Burn
To really understand what the galaxy is like in the late 32nd century, you need to know about Star Trek: Discovery and something called the Burn. The Burn was a huge disaster that completely changed the galaxy. The starship Discovery traveled far into the future and found that most galactic civilization had fallen apart. This happened because dilithium – the substance that makes faster-than-light travel possible – became incredibly unstable, causing it to explode and destroy ships and even entire planets. Eventually, the crew of Discovery figured out what caused the Burn, and the Federation is now rebuilding and becoming powerful again.
The sixth episode of Starfleet Academy finally shows the full impact of the Burn. The episode features a joint mission between Starfleet Academy and the War College, beginning with a briefing that highlights the current instability of the galaxy. The chancellors explain that these new cadets will encounter dangers unlike any faced by previous Starfleet officers. They’ll be exploring previously mapped regions that have changed drastically in the last hundred years, and will have to navigate threats like pirates and powerful crime bosses who now control territories there.
We’re currently experiencing a particularly thrilling period in Star Trek history. The show has returned to the classic, open-ended exploration of the original series, but with significantly more advanced technology—and that technology is falling into the wrong hands. For a long time, galactic society kept dangerous people under control, but they’ve thrived in the last hundred years. Episode 6 really highlights how serious the threats have become: the Federation is now facing danger not just from its traditional enemies, but also from everyday criminals and ruthless alien species.
In a way, Star Trek is back to its original roots. The show is now venturing into uncharted territory – a chaotic future where the Federation is struggling to rebuild. This is arguably the most compelling story Star Trek has ever presented.
