Darth Maul’s Brother’s Secret Role In New Star Wars Show Revealed

Though Savage Opress, Darth Maul’s brother, perished in The Clone Wars, he unexpectedly reappears in the Star Wars story Maul – Shadow Lord.

Darth Maul, who was seemingly defeated in The Phantom Menace, unexpectedly survived and reappeared in The Clone Wars. He joined forces with his brother, Savage Opress, and together they caused chaos throughout the galaxy. However, Darth Sidious later killed Savage, leaving Maul alone. The story Maul – Shadow Lord takes place a year after the events of The Clone Wars, and follows Maul as he tries to establish a new criminal organization while the Empire is in power.

In a recent interview with Star Wars Insider (reported by Star Wars Holocron), Sam Witwer, the voice actor for Darth Maul, shared that Maul is deeply affected by the fate of his brother, Savage Opress. Maul apparently recognizes he didn’t fully value Savage’s loyalty and feels he let him down. You can find Witwer’s full comments below.

He’s taking time to reflect on his own identity and also considering his relationship with his former apprentice and brother, Savage Opress. He’s questioning whether he treated Savage well, given how devoted Savage had been, and has come to the conclusion that he didn’t – he feels he let Savage down.

Although Savage Opress isn’t coming back to life, actor Sam Witwer has hinted that the character will still be important to the story. Maul will likely be influenced by his past experiences with Savage and the mistakes made with him. This seems to be why Maul is now taking on Devon Izara as an apprentice – he wants to mentor Izara in ways he wishes he had with Savage.

While Savage could return through flashbacks or Force visions, likely still voiced by Clancy Brown, it seems his impact will primarily be felt through how his memory affects Maul. Because Maul – Shadow Lord season 1 has only 10 episodes – significantly fewer than the 20-22 episodes in seasons of The Clone Wars where Savage appeared – there’s less opportunity to weave these flashbacks and visions into the current storyline.

Before the recent interview with Witwer, the trailer for Maul – Shadow Lord showed him rebuilding his criminal organization on the planet Janix. He’s being pursued by both Imperial Inquisitors and Brander Lawson, a detective with the Janix police force. The cast includes Witwer as Maul, alongside Gideon Adlon as Devon Izara, Wagner Moura as Brander Lawson, Richard Ayoade as Maul’s ally Two Boots, Dennis Haysbert as Jedi Master Eeko-Dio Daki, Vanessa Marshall as Rook Kast, David W. Collins as Spybot, A.J. LoCascio as Marrok, Steve Blum as Icarus, Chris Diamantopoulos as Looti Vario, and Charlie Bushnell as Rylee Lawson.

Maul – Shadow Lord begins with a two-episode premiere on April 6 on Disney+.
