Kate Hudson got a lesson on how to lose an Oscar from Kurt Russell.
Kate Hudson said she felt ready for anything when she attended the Academy Awards for the first time in 2001. She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the Cameron Crowe film that launched her career.
Looking back, I was very young and things moved so quickly,” Kate said on SiriusXMās The Howard Stern Show on February 24th. She then explained that Kurtāwho has been with her mother, Goldie Hawn, for 43 yearsāis like a reliable guide for both her career and personal life.
She explained that her father, who raised her, always told her not to pay attention to what everyone else said. Heād emphasize that you canāt predict the future ā you might succeed when you expect to fail, or fail when you think youāll succeed.
Kate said that despite many people telling her she would win, she entered the ceremony with no expectations. This was because the actor from Tombstone had advised her to do so.
You shouldn’t expect to win every time,” the 46-year-old explained, recalling her loss to Marcia Gay Harden, who played Pollock. “It was a valuable learning experience.”
Having just received her second Oscar nomination for Song Sung Blue, Kate is approaching the awards ceremony with the same attitude as before.
She told Howard Stern she doesn’t like scripted speeches. She prefers remarks that feel genuine, whether they’re heartfelt and spontaneous or a little nervous and raw.
Kate admitted she was anxious about talking about her family, feeling like she had a lot to share and wasn’t sure how to best put it into words. She decided to just speak honestly and let her feelings flow naturally.
Kate Hudson is very grateful to Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. She and her brother, Oliver Hudson, learned from the couple the importance of earning your own way and not relying on others for help.

She recently mentioned on the podcast Happy Sad Confused that while they grew up with advantages, her parents strongly emphasized that those benefits werenāt deserved. They insisted that to maintain that lifestyle, her and her siblings would need to work hard and earn it themselves ā that privilege alone wouldnāt be enough.
That’s why Kate was initially pleased to share her biological father, Bill Hudson’s, last name when she first became well-known in the early 2000s.
She explained that she was determined to be independent from her parents. She didn’t want to accept any job opportunities that came through them, and she specifically didn’t want people to know they were her parents.

They instilled in them the idea that they would only truly succeed and maintain their lifestyle through hard work and dedication, and that privilege alone wouldnāt be enough.

Goldie Hawn married actor Gus Trikonis, who appeared in West Side Story, in 1969. They split up in 1973, but Goldie didnāt officially divorce him until late 1975, after becoming engaged to Bill Hudson, a member of the Hudson Brothers band.
Goldie Hawn and Bill Hudson married on July 3, 1976, following Goldieās divorce. They had two children, Oliver and Kate Hudson, before separating in 1980 and eventually divorcing in 1982.
In 2015, Oliver publicly wished his father, Bill, a Happy Father’s Day with an old childhood photo featuring both his father and Kate, but with a pointed caption reading, “Happy abandonment day⦔ Bill responded to the post in an interview with the Daily Mail, stating he no longer considered Oliver or Kate his children and requested they stop using the family surname, Hudson. He described Oliverās post as a deliberate and hurtful attack, and declared that he considered both of them estranged from his life.
Oliver revealed on Watch What Happens Live that the public disagreement actually led to a conversation, and he reconnected with Bill after not speaking for twelve years.
In an April 2024 interview on CBS Sunday Morning, Kate stated that while she and Bill didn’t have a close relationship, things were beginning to improve.
She continued, saying she wasn’t sure what would happen, especially regarding her father. Ultimately, she just wants him to be happy and isn’t focused on any specific outcome.
Bill has three children: Zachary and Emily with his late ex-wife, Cindy Williams, whom he was married to from 1982 to 2000, and Lalania with Caroline Graham, born in 2006.

Goldie and Bill’s first child was born Sept. 7, 1976.
Similar to his sister Kate, Oliver was raised by their mother and her partner, Kurt Russell. However, in a 2018 interview on Larry King Live, he mentioned he and Bill were making an effort to stay in touch.
I shared something funny, but with a bit of a dark edge, and it unexpectedly brought my partner and me closer together. We’ve been in touch ever since.
But Kurt will forever be his dad.
Oliver shared with Us Weekly in December 2025 that the actor from Miracle isn’t his biological father, but he still shares many of the same habits and personality traits. He described the actor as a very energetic and passionate person, someone who fully invests himself in both love and laughter.
Oliver explained that he inherited his motherās sensitive nature. He shared that he feels things very deeplyāperhaps too deeplyāand takes 20 milligrams of Lexapro to help manage it.
Oliver married Erinn Bartlett in 2006, and together they have three children: Wilder, born August 23, 2007; Bodhi, born March 19, 2010; and Rio, born July 18, 2013.

Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn first connected and fell in love on the set of the 1983 movie Swing Shift, a romantic story set during World War II. Theyāve been a couple ever since, and have chosen not to get married.
As someone who’s navigated the ups and downs of relationships myself, I can definitely relate to shared experiences. Kurt, who was married to Season Hubley from 1979 to 1983, shared with TODAY in 2020 that he and I both understand what it’s like to go through marriage and divorce. It’s a common thread that connects us, and it’s something many people can identify with.
Goldie explained that marriage ‘just didn’t suit either of us.’ While she’s not ruling it out for the future, she never felt they needed to be married, adding that marriage often seems more like a business arrangement than a loving partnership.

Kate and Oliver consider Kurt a father figure, affectionately calling him “Pa.” They also share a close relationship with Kurt and Seasonās son, Boston Russell, who was born on February 16, 1980.
Kate recalled a confusing time when her mother started dating someone new. On her podcast, Sibling Revelry, she explained that as a child, she wondered if this man would become her father, and if his son would become her brother. It was a lot for her to process at such a young age, as it marked the beginning of their families blending together.
Boston generally keeps to himself, but he does support his family publicly, like when he attended the Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony honoring Kurt and Goldie in 2017.

Kurt and Goldie’s only child together, Wyatt Russell, was born July 10, 1986.
The actor from Thunderbolts was a professional hockey player in Europe. He had to stop playing in 2010 due to injuries and then began working full-time in his familyās business.
Wyatt married Meredith Hagner in 2019, and they have two sons: Buddy Prine, born in March 2021, and Boone Joseph, born on February 13, 2024.
Becoming a parent gave Wyatt a new understanding of his own parents, he shared with People magazine in April 2025. He realized they simply wanted him to be happy and live a good life, and now thatās all he wants for his own children. He believes his parents feel the same way about him.
Pretty much.
Goldie shared with Australian Women’s Weekly in 2022 that her children and grandchildren are her greatest source of pride. She described being a grandmother as a wonderful experience, full of joy, and emphasized how much she values family.

Kate had her first child on January 7, 2004, with her husband at the time, Chris Robinson. They split up in 2006 and officially divorced in October 2007, but have maintained a friendly relationship as they co-parent their child.
Kate described her relationship with the Black Crowes singer as something that had transformed over time. Speaking to The Times Online in 2009, she explained, ‘Heās always going to be a part of my life, but our romantic love evolved.’ She added that they were meant to be parents together, and their son would keep them connected for the rest of their lives.
In February 2026, Chris announced that his son, Ryder, would be graduating from NYU in May, expressing how incredibly proud he was.
Chris shared with People magazine that their son seems to be considering a career in acting, but he’s also incredibly talented musically. He’s a skilled singer and guitar player who’s passionate about music.
The musician continued, praising him as a young man with a wonderful personality. He described him as charming, intelligent, and good-looking, adding that he has a bright future and can achieve anything he sets his mind to.
In April 2025, Ryder celebrated his two-year anniversary with girlfriend Piper Lacy on Instagram. He had previously been dating Iris Apatow.

Kate and musician Matt Bellamy welcomed their son, Bingham, on July 9, 2011. They named him after both Mattās mother, Marilyn Bingham, and Kateās father, Bing Russell. Although they became engaged, the couple announced their split in December 2014.
Breakups are always hard, but you have a choice in how you deal with them,” Kate explained to Allure back in 2015. “If things had worked out between Matt and me, we’d still be together. But we both wanted different things for our futures, so we decided to go our separate ways. That doesn’t mean we can’t find a way to co-parent and create a positive environment for our children, though.”
Matt and Elle Evans got married in 2019 and have two children: Lovella, born in June 2020, and George, born in May 2024.
In a 2021 interview with Women’s Health, Kate shared something her husband, Matt, said that resonated with her: “He wanted to ensure their son, Bing, felt like he was gaining, not losing, through their choices.” Kate believes this shared priority has strengthened their relationship, as they both prioritize protecting each otherās feelings.
Based on what his mom has told me, Bingham loves playing the drums. Heās also a baseball player and seems interested in learning about finance.
Kate mentioned on Late Night With Seth Meyers in 2024 that her younger son invests in stocks himself. He stays informed about the market, understands different stock and bond types, and is remarkably knowledgeable. She thinks it will be fascinating to see how he develops as an investor.

Kate began dating musician Danny Fujikawa in 2016. They had a daughter, Rani, on October 2, 2018. Danny, who had been a friend for years, proposed in 2021.
Kate shared with the Sunday Times in 2022 that she and her partner hope to get married someday. While they aren’t rushing into it ā she already has a lot on her plate ā she’s definitely looking forward to it. She was particularly touched when he was looking at old videos of himself with his daughter, Rani, finding it incredibly sweet. She described him as a fantastic father and stepfather.
Kate Hudson, the actress known for Almost Famous, said she feels more able to be present as a mother now that her son, Ryder, is grown. She was 24 years old when Ryder was born.
Ryder and I have such a unique bond because I practically watched him grow up. Becoming a mom to him really coincided with my own journey of becoming a woman ā it was a deliberate choice, and it just felt right. We both felt this intense connection, and I was inseparable from him for the first two years ā I took him everywhere. I even kept him home with me, not sending him to school until he was ten, which is different from how I approached things with my other children. Itās just a really special, close relationship.
Outside of school, Rani travels the world with her parents. In 2024, she appeared in a SKIMS holiday ad alongside her family ā including her parents, brothers, uncle Oliverās family, and grandmother Goldie.
