First Look at Stranger Things Creators’ New Netflix Supernatural Mystery Series Revealed (& There’s a Release Date)

Okay, so Stranger Things is finished, which is sad, but I’m really excited to see what Matt and Ross Duffer—the Duffer Brothers—do next! They’ve got a deal with Netflix and are already super busy. We got a sneak peek at their new romantic horror show, Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, and it’s coming out in March. Now, they’re giving us a first look at another series they’re producing, called The Boroughs. It’s a supernatural mystery, and honestly, I’m already hooked just knowing the Duffers are involved!

We’ve got a premiere date for The Boroughs: it’s coming to Netflix on May 21st! Plus, check out photos of the incredible cast below.

Welcome to Netflix’s The Boroughs

Netflix has shared a new set of photos for its upcoming series, The Boroughs. The images showcase the main actors, including Bill Pullman as Jack, Geena Davis as Renee, Alfred Molina as Sam, Alfre Woodard as Judy, Clarke Peter as Art, and Denis O’Hare as Wally. The series also stars Jena Malone (known for Sucker Punch), Ed Begley Jr. (Best in Show), Jane Kaczmarek (Malcolm in the Middle), and several other talented performers.

The series takes place in a beautiful retirement community where a surprising group of residents must team up to prevent a strange danger from taking their most precious resource: time.

The Boroughs Is Inspired By A Sci-Fi Cult-Classic

When The Boroughs was announced, the creators, The Duffer Brothers, shared that they’d always loved the movie Cocoon and wondered why no one had made anything similar since. Then, Jeff and Will pitched them an idea for The Boroughs: a story about retirees dealing with monsters. The Duffers were excited because the show promised to portray older characters with respect and realism, focusing on their genuine struggles – and a bit of the supernatural – without making aging the joke. They described it as exactly the kind of show they’d been hoping to create.

Ron Howard’s 1985 film, Cocoon, told the story of a retirement community helping a group of friendly aliens. The new series, The Boroughs, flips that idea around – instead of helping aliens, a group of retired actors protect the world from a dangerous alien race. While Stranger Things aimed for a younger audience, The Boroughs creators, Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, are clearly targeting older viewers who will recognize and appreciate the veteran cast from their famous roles in the 80s, 90s, and 2000s.

The new TV show The Boroughs will be available to stream on Netflix starting May 21st. Join the conversation and share your thoughts on the show with other fans on the ComicBook Forum!
