The Mobile Suit Gundam series, as a franchise, has frequently delved into space exploration. Although many story arcs within this mech anime are set in alternate worlds or timelines, the depiction of robots navigating through outer space is a recurring theme that originated from Yoshiyuki Tomino’s original concept. Even at the age of 80, Tomino continues to express his ideas and regularly participates in events centered around his iconic anime franchise. During the recent Spacetide 2025 event, Tomino was vocal about Elon Musk and other advocates of human space travel, sharing his thoughts on humanity’s journey towards the stars.
At the recent gathering, Tomino subtly criticized individuals like Elon Musk and others advocating for human settlement on Mars. He stated, “It’s naive to think we should move to Mars because many people don’t grasp the severity of outer space. They lack the capacity to visualize the vastness of space. If we launch a rocket towards Mars, how will we secure fuel for the return journey? Those who discuss sending humans to Mars without taking into account that there is no support base there are merely amateurs.
Tomino Talks Space
Yoshiyuki Tomino, the creator of Gundam, doesn’t consider colonizing Mars an achievable feat easily, but he emphasizes that space travel should not be abandoned altogether for mankind. Instead, he advocates for space tourism as a means to boost Japan’s economy. In his own words: “In the next ten years, Japan should make it possible for tourists to go on low-orbit sightseeing trips. It’s not just about tourism; I want politicians, military personnel, religious leaders, and scientists to travel to low-orbit satellites. Observing Earth from space for a few days could change our perspective on the world. This would be an enriching learning experience for children, but it requires developing a completely safe rocket.
In simpler terms, “Mobile Suit Gundam” has concluded another action-packed anime series that partially takes place in space alongside “GQuuuuuuX”. Notably, this series created by director Hideaki Anno of “Neon Genesis Evangelion” fame will not be continuing for a second season. However, the mech anime franchise is set to produce more projects in the future, with the Gundam series confirming that a sequel film for “Hathaway’s Flash” is being developed. Additionally, this year’s San Diego Comic-Con intends to honor the anniversary of “Gundam Wing”, suggesting that both new and classic stories will be explored in the future for the franchise.
