6 Sci-fi Video Game Sequels We’re Still Waiting to See After Years

The video game industry frequently relies on sequels. Creating a successful game requires significant effort, so developers naturally build upon their existing work. As a result, many popular science fiction game series have announced or hinted at future installments. Fans have been eagerly awaiting news about these games for years, and developers have slowly revealed bits of information. However, most of these highly anticipated sequels are still a ways off from release.

Fans have been eagerly anticipating these six sci-fi game sequels for a long time. While we’ve listed them in the likely order of release, exact release dates are still uncertain.

6) Mass Effect 5

The last main Mass Effect game, Andromeda, came out in 2017, but many fans try to forget it ever happened. It’s been almost ten years since a truly new Mass Effect title, even though the developers at BioWare have been hinting at a new game for the last five years, with only a remastered version released in the meantime.

BioWare officially announced they were working on the next Mass Effect game in 2020, but details have been scarce. So far, we know Liara T’Soni will return from the original trilogy, and the game will be built using the Unreal Engine – a change from the engine used in Andromeda, which caused some problems. The good news is BioWare recently confirmed the team is now completely dedicated to the project, meaning we can likely expect the game within the next few years.

5) Alien: Isolation 2

Released in 2014, Alien: Isolation is widely considered one of the greatest survival horror games ever made, offering a terrifying experience in the vastness of space. While it didn’t achieve the sales Sega anticipated, it remains a favorite among horror game enthusiasts. After nearly ten years of silence from the developers, Creative Assembly, most players believed it would remain a single, self-contained game.

In 2024, on the 10th anniversary of Isolation, the game’s developer announced they’re working on a sequel. Beyond that announcement, details are scarce. We can probably expect to see Xenomorphs again, but everything else is currently unknown. Realistically, Isolation 2 is likely several years off, as Creative Assembly hasn’t even released a short teaser yet.

4) Fallout 5

It’s been nearly ten years since Fallout 4 came out. While Bethesda released Fallout 76, an online multiplayer game set in the same universe, fans are still waiting for the next major Fallout installment. Given the huge popularity of the new Fallout TV series, many expected Bethesda to speed up development on Fallout 5.

Bethesda likes to take its time with game development. They’ve confirmed that The Elder Scrolls 6 is their priority, and Fallout 5 won’t even begin development until The Elder Scrolls 6 is finished. Given how much work remains on The Elder Scrolls 6, it could be almost ten years before Fallout 5 is released.

3) BioShock 4

When BioShock Infinite came out in 2013, many wondered if the series would continue after Ken Levine left Irrational Games to start a new company, Ghost Story Games. However, 2K Games reassured fans that the series wasn’t over. In 2014, they announced plans to continue developing BioShock games without Levine at the helm.

It had been quiet for a while, but in 2019, a new BioShock game was officially announced as being in development. However, almost six years later, Cloud Chamber – a studio created by 2K to work on the next BioShock – hasn’t revealed much about it. The only significant news is the addition of Rod Fergusson to the team in 2025. This is noteworthy because he’s known for helping to successfully finish BioShock Infinite.

2) Half-Life 3

Ever since 2007, fans have been eagerly awaiting a new Half-Life game. While Valve released Half-Life: Alyx in 2020, it’s only playable with virtual reality equipment, limiting access for many players. Despite that, the desire for Half-Life 3 remains incredibly strong.

For years, rumors have circulated that Valve might be developing a new Half-Life game. While nothing has been confirmed, people continue to speculate about Half-Life 3. It’s easy to wonder if these rumors suggest something is actually in the works, but it’s also possible that fans will never see Half-Life 3 released.

1) Beyond Good & Evil 2

Ubisoft first announced Beyond Good & Evil 2 way back in 2008. After that, updates stopped for almost ten years. They showed a new trailer in 2017, and have consistently said the game is important to them, but we haven’t seen much progress since then.

As of 2022, Beyond Good & Evil 2 officially took the title of the AAA game with the longest development cycle, surpassing Duke Nukem Forever. It’s been over three years since then, and the game still doesn’t seem close to release. While Ubisoft recently announced the cancellation of six projects, Beyond Good & Evil 2 wasn’t one of them. However, it’s still best not to expect this game to actually come out.
