HBO Max’s latest psychological thriller is a hit! It’s visually stunning, full of suspenseful twists, and keeps viewers glued to the screen. The cast delivers amazing performances, led by a standout star, propelling it to the top of the platform’s most-watched list – surpassing even popular movies like Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and Masterminds.
The new thriller, Dead of Winter, released in September 2025, features a powerful performance from Emma Thompson alongside Judy Greer and Laurel Marsden. The film is both suspenseful and frightening, telling the story of Barb (Thompson), a woman overwhelmed by grief who becomes lost in a blizzard while driving near a Minnesota lake. Forced to seek shelter at a secluded cabin, she discovers a young woman (Marsden) being held captive by a dangerous couple (Greer and Marc Menchaca). With no way to contact help, Barb quickly understands she’s the only hope for anyone to escape alive.
Dead of Winter is a No Frills Thriller That Will Break Your Heart
The film was well-received by both critics (76%) and audiences (78%), though some felt the detailed backstory slowed down the pace of the action. Despite this, critic Mel Campbell of ABC Radio praised the film as both emotionally touching and frightening, admitting she enjoyed it more than expected. She noted the story is somewhat predictable, but praised the lead actor, Thompson, for bringing a compelling vulnerability to the role, and highlighted a standout performance by Judy Greer. Overall, the film is considered a showcase for strong acting.
The cold, icy environment heightens the tension, reminding viewers of the movie Fargo. One viewer noted the film’s stark, snowy scenes create a feeling of loneliness and harshness. While the story itself isn’t particularly original, Thompson delivers a powerful and moving performance that kept them fully engaged, hoping for her character’s success and safety.
Even if you don’t know her work, seeing Mary Elizabeth Winstead take on such a different role in Dead of Winter is a good enough reason to watch it. Add to that a fantastic performance by Judy Greer, along with a classic story of people trying to survive and find hope, and you’ve got a really enjoyable way to spend an evening.
