Every Avengers Team Who Assembled Before the “First” Team

The Avengers – Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Ant-Man, and Wasp – first teamed up in 1963 to defeat Loki and quickly became Marvel’s most popular superhero group. While the team has evolved over the years with new members joining the fight against numerous villains, the idea of powerful heroes banding together isn’t new. Throughout history, groups of heroes have always emerged to defend people from threats. For as long as there have been stories, people have imagined heroes uniting to protect the innocent.

Throughout history, from the earliest times to the mid-20th century, humanity has always relied on heroes to fight against darkness. Today’s Avengers are simply the latest in a long line of those champions.

5) Avengers 1959

Before the well-known Avengers team formed in 1963, Nick Fury created an earlier version in 1959. This team wasn’t focused on typical superheroics; instead, they secretly hunted down Nazis who had escaped justice after World War II. Called the Avengers Initiative, the mission was led by Nick Fury and Dum Dum Dugan, who gathered heroes such as the spy Dominic Fortune, monster hunter Ulysses Bloodstone, the Atlantean princess Namorita, detective Blonde Phantom, and Nazi hunter Silver Sable. Interestingly, this team even included people who would later become villains, like Sabretooth and Kraven the Hunter. Though unofficial, their efforts protected the world from several dangerous Nazi supervillains.

4) 1950s Avengers

The What If…? series looks at different versions of reality, and one story imagines a team of Avengers forming in the 1950s. In this alternate world, a villain named Yellow Claw kidnaps President Eisenhower, prompting the U.S. government to assemble a team of heroes to rescue him. This 1950s Avengers team—which includes 3-D Man, Marvel Boy, Venus, Gorilla-Man, and M-11—works with agent Jimmy Woo. After some disagreements, they successfully rescue the President and stop Yellow Claw’s plan. This team later served as the inspiration for the lesser-known Marvel group, the Agents of Atlas.

3) Viking Avengers

Thor has lived for thousands of years, and the first team of heroes he fought alongside formed way back in 1047 AD, during the Viking Age. In a time filled with legends and magic, Thor’s bravery was well-known, and he joined forces with other powerful individuals to defend the world from old and dangerous enemies like Mephisto and Apocalypse. Although he hadn’t wielded his hammer, Mjolnir, for very long, Thor was strong and fearless enough to lead this early team. This Viking-era group included powerful figures like Boldolf the Black, a strong warrior, an Atlantean with incredible fighting skills, a Sasquatch who was a master of magic, a Native American Ghost Rider, a Black Panther who operated outside the law, and a witch who served as the host for the powerful Phoenix.

2) Tribe of the Moon

Long ago, a team of powerful Native American heroes known as the Tribe of the Moon protected prehistoric Canada from various threats. This team included Talisman, who could control spirits; Bear Brother, with incredible strength; Fire Hand, who manipulated fire; Talks-To-Spirits, a mystic healer; and Willow-Dancer, who could tame beasts. They battled everything from time-traveling sharks and monstrous Lemurians to giant creatures from other dimensions and the sorcerer Llan. Centuries later, the legacy of Talisman continued with Elizabeth Twoyoungmen, who joined the Canadian superhero team Alpha Flight.

1) Avengers 1,000,000 BC

A million years ago, the very first team of Avengers assembled, marking the beginning of an age of heroes. While early humans were just starting to emerge from caves, these powerful protectors defended them from massive threats like the Celestials and Multiversal Masters of Evil. Led by a young Odin, the team included a Ghost Rider who rode a mammoth, a powerful warrior called Starbrand, the sorcerer Agamotto, the original Iron Fist, a mutant connected to the Phoenix Force, a primal Moon Knight, and the first Black Panther of his tribe. These heroes weren’t just the first Avengers – they established the legacies of some of Marvel’s most famous titles, which would continue for over a million years.
