Yellowstone Spinoff Marshals Kills Off Major Character in Premiere

The Yellowstone spin-off is already leaning into heartbreak.

In the first episode of Marshals (formerly Y: Marshals), Luke Grimes’ character, Kayce Dutton, is shown visiting his wife Monica Dutton’s grave, revealing she has passed away. Kelsey Asbille plays Monica.

“I miss you, baby,” Kayce says in the episode. “I miss my wife—my best friend. My only friend.”

Throughout the episode, Kayce and his son Tate Dutton subtly referenced Monica’s death, also suggesting she was in pain before she passed away.

Right from the start of the episode, Kayce has a dream where he’s desperately looking for Monica. He’s running through a war-torn landscape, calling out her name: “Monica, where are you?”

Kayce later thinks about raising their teenage son on his own, and admits to him, “Your mom was better at handling things like this.”

It turns out Monica passed away after a fight with cancer, likely caused by the dangerous levels of pollution on her family’s land.

The series begins with a significant character’s death, but according to showrunner Spencer Hudnut, creating this twist was challenging. This was because Kelsey wasn’t able to be involved in the new spin-off centered around the Dutton family.

Spencer explained to The Hollywood Reporter that he and Luke never planned to kill off Monica. Instead, they were discussing how to handle the character if the actress wasn’t available, and wanted to find the most respectful way to move the storyline forward.

Although Kelsey couldn’t continue writing her character’s storyline, Spencer was determined to give her a satisfying conclusion after the emotional ending of Yellowstone. The finale showed her and Kayce building their own ranch and stepping away from the rest of the Dutton family’s conflicts.

As a huge fan, I really appreciated that the writers didn’t ruin Beth and Rip’s journey in Yellowstone. Spencer, one of the show’s creators, explained they absolutely let that dream come true – Beth even says it’s a dream come true at the end! They really let them achieve what they wanted, which made it even more heartbreaking when life just threw everything into chaos for Kayce and his family. It felt so real, and honestly, that’s why I’m so invested.

This new series promises to be captivating. As Spencer explained, that’s the situation his character is in when we meet him in Marshals.

As a storyteller, I always aim to create characters with depth, and Bobby Nash was intentionally crafted with a powerful purpose. When we developed his story, we knew he needed to represent the ultimate sacrifice made by our first responders. They run towards danger, putting their lives on the line every day so others can live, and that’s exactly what Bobby’s journey reflects. We wanted to honor their bravery and dedication, and his arc is a tribute to their selfless service.

While the pandemic brought her back for a couple of episodes in season six, she ultimately returned for the show’s final episode to ensure her character, Amy, and Jonah (Ben Feldman) got the satisfying conclusion fans hoped for.

As a huge fan of The Magicians, I was completely gutted when Quentin, played by Jason Ralph, gave his life to save Eliot (Hale Appleman) in the season four finale. It was a powerful moment, and honestly, the show wasn’t afraid to kill off characters – it’s part of what made it so unique. But it was really disappointing to me that Jason didn’t come back for the fifth and final season, even though death is common in that world.
