Initially planned for release this year, the fantasy action RPG Soulframe from developer Digital Extremes is uncertain about its 2025 launch date. Interestingly enough, players can already experience the game as access to the pre-alpha phase (nicknamed “Preludes”) has been made available until this weekend’s end.
Eurogamer received an explanation about the project from Geoff Crookes, Soulframe’s creative director, and Sarah Asselin, their community manager. When asked if Soulframe was planning a 2025 launch, Crookes expressed some uncertainty, saying, “I might not be entirely certain, but our goal is to release it as soon as possible.” He went on to say that they would assess their progress in the fall before making a final decision.
Meanwhile, Asselin referred to the fall release window as a “desired target,” explaining further, “We’re examining our progress by the end of the year, but we aim to feel assured that we’ve developed Soulframe to a stage where it seems fitting, not just for the players, but also for the developers.
It seems that, with us being deep into July, there’s a strong indication that Digital Extremes might be planning for a shift into the following year. However, if you can’t wait to see the fruits of their labor (Soulframe was initially announced in 2022), there’s still an opportunity for you.
During the ongoing Tennocon (Warframe’s annual community gathering), Digital Extremes revealed they will grant access to the game’s alpha to anyone who registers during this event. With Tennocon continuing until the weekend, time is running out, but you can still register for the alpha on the Soulframe website by creating an account and subsequently downloading the game to experience its latest version.
In his conversation with Eurogamer, Crookes shared that Digital Extremes had not anticipated how many players were eagerly waiting to join: “We didn’t anticipate the queue would be so long when we started letting people in, causing some early sign-ups to miss out. Frustrated individuals might have overlooked their emails, so we decided to take action and offer more opportunities.
If you haven’t kept up with Soulframe yet and are contemplating whether to explore it, Digital Extremes recently unveiled a fresh trailer during Tennocon that you can watch above. The video highlights the game’s revamped combat system and an encounter against a fearsome three-headed bear, suggesting it offers exciting, albeit somewhat familiar, fantasy action.
