Spoilers for Scream 7 are below!
Details have emerged about a surprising cut from Scream 7. A post-credit scene, which would have significantly altered the story, didn’t make the final cut. The film itself was a box office success, earning $96 million globally during its opening weekend. The latest installment centers on a new wave of murders targeting Neve Campbell’s character, with her daughter now in danger from the new Ghostface.
The reveal of the killer in Scream 7 frustrated some viewers, not because of who it was, but why they did it. The movie tried something new for the series – using AI and deepfake technology to bring back characters from previous films. The main example was Stu Macher, played by Matthew Lillard, who the movie initially leads audiences to believe is the killer. Although this turned out to be a false lead, the AI technology allowed for other brief cameos as well, including a poorly kept secret about David Arquette’s appearance.
Kevin Williamson, the writer and director of Scream 7, recently told Esquire (via FearHQ) that the film initially included a post-credit scene with a major twist. Although the final cut clearly establishes Stu Macher’s death, a scene existed showing him still alive. After test audiences reacted negatively to the idea of Stu surviving, Williamson decided to cut the scene, opting for the ending audiences ultimately saw in theaters.
We were trying to have it both ways, and honestly, I wish I’d come up with that idea. But it was actually Guy Busick who wrote it into the script. He handled all the artificial intelligence aspects of the story. When I first read it, I wondered how it would even be possible – how could the character still be alive?
We also considered that if it turned out to be AI controlling the character, some viewers might be let down that he wasn’t a real person. We actually filmed scenes both ways – with and without the AI reveal. We even had a short, extra scene prepared just in case. But surprisingly, the team decided the audience preferred the character to die.
It feels more believable and authentic. The idea of him still being alive is a bit far-fetched, but given how realistic fake AI has become, it’s not entirely impossible anymore.

Williamson also discussed Lillard’s talent as an actor, a topic that gained attention recently after filmmaker Quentin Tarantino shared his thoughts. However, the director of Scream 7 only had positive things to say about the beloved actor. Williamson stated:
He’s genuinely one of the kindest and most down-to-earth people you’ll ever encounter. But then, when he performs, he completely transforms into a dynamic and unpredictable presence. I believe he has a lot more talent to showcase, and he’s at a great point in his career to do so.
He brings depth and experience to his roles. He’s a very developed actor who can add nuance and beauty to any performance. He’s a valuable asset and we want to see him in more films.
A ninth Scream movie is looking increasingly likely, as the latest installment has had the best opening weekend of any film in the series. While it’s still a mystery who the next killer will be, writer Kevin Williamson has hinted at potential directions for the story. Originally, there was a plan to reveal Stu Macher was still alive at the end of the credits, and he was intended to be the killer in the next film. Since that idea has been dropped, it creates opportunities for entirely new storylines and suspects.
It’s doubtful the new film will recapture what fans missed with Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, but with Neve Campbell returning, the future of the Scream franchise looks promising. Campbell has shared that she has ideas for future Scream movies after the latest installment, hinting that there could be several more sequels to come.
