Hailey Bieber Says Pregnancy Was a Surprise Due to Septum in Uterus

Never say never to Hailey Bieber.

The model was surprised to learn she was pregnant with her son, Jack Blues, with husband Justin Bieber. Doctors had previously told her that a uterine septum might make it difficult for her to get pregnant.

Hailey shared on the March 3rd episode of the SHE MD podcast that she was surprised to learn she had a septum in her uterus. Her OB/GYN, Dr. Thaïs Aliabadi, had previously advised her to monitor it before trying to get pregnant, as it could have caused complications.

Hailey, 29, remembered Dr. Aliabadi mentioning a possible minor surgery she might need before having children. Hailey said she’d thought, ‘Okay, I’m not planning on getting pregnant anytime soon, so we can deal with that if it comes up.’ But then she unexpectedly became pregnant.

Dr. Aliabadi was both surprised and worried by recent developments, explaining that she had previously advised Hailey—who had a mini-stroke and heart surgery in 2022—against becoming pregnant.

“And then she calls me, and she’s like, ‘I’m pregnant!’” Dr. Aliabadi said. “And I’m like, ‘No!’”

Hailey’s gynecologist was concerned because she has a uterine septum, a genetic condition that increases the risk of miscarriage or premature birth. As Dr. Aliabadi described it, a normal uterus is shaped a certain way, but with a septum, there’s a wall inside the uterine cavity.

Dr. Aliabadi explained that a deviated septum can range from mild to severe. They determine the severity using an ultrasound: a septum less than 1 centimeter is considered mild, while one between 1 and 2 centimeters is moderate.

Hailey’s condition was considered moderate. The doctor explained that this affects 1 to 3 percent of women, meaning Hailey had around a 25 to 40 percent chance of miscarriage and a 10 to 20 percent chance of delivering her baby prematurely.

The founder of Rhode explained that a premature delivery was their main concern, considering her personal medical background and the fact that her mother, Kennya Baldwin, had previously experienced preterm labor with both her and her sister, Alaia Baldwin, who is 33.

Hailey initially worried she might go into labor prematurely, especially considering her mother’s experience. However, her body progressed as it should. A PreTRM test helped them assess the risk of delivering her son, Jack, before 37 weeks. Thankfully, they discovered as the baby grew that a membrane was expanding and opening naturally, which was a positive sign.

Even though her first pregnancy was a bit frightening, Hailey handled everything with grace and remained remarkably calm throughout the process.

I’ll never forget a conversation I had with Dr. Aliabadi. I was explaining the potential risks to a patient, and she turned to me with such confidence. She said, ‘I truly believe everything will be alright.’ It was so reassuring, and I found myself agreeing with her. I remember thinking, ‘You know what? I think so too.’

Jack’s delivery was successful, and Hailey and Justin, who got married in 2018, are now enjoying being new parents.

Hailey shared how much she enjoys spending time with her 18-month-old son. Speaking at a Vogue event in Australia, she said time with him is passing quickly, and she’s realizing how important it is to cherish every moment.
