The performer, originally from Freetown, Massachusetts, explained that her way of speaking—without pronouncing the ‘r’ sound—is a homage to her home state and a reflection of her father’s strong accent.
“I am a Masshole through and through,” she declared. “I will probably die here.”
Mikayla, 27, mentioned that people have always commented on her voice, which eventually sparked her passion for the beauty industry, where she now works.
She explained that she started wearing makeup because she was being bullied for her voice – something that still happens today. People constantly told her she looked and sounded like a man, and she worried that would prevent her from ever finding love. This really damaged her self-confidence, so makeup became a source of comfort and ultimately, her chosen career path.
Mikayla recently announced that she and Cody Hawken are divorcing after being married for two years.
