4 Years After the Last New Episode, the Best Sci-fi Series on TV Finally Gets an Update (And It’s Big)

The 2020s have already given us some excellent sci-fi shows, like Silo, Fallout, and the new series Pluribus. Despite these successes, the best sci-fi show on television hasn’t released a new episode in four years. However, there’s exciting news – a recent update suggests that might finally change, potentially ending a long wait for fans.

I’ve been getting a lot of questions about whether The Orville will return for a fourth season, and it’s been radio silence since the season 3 finale dropped on Hulu back in 2022. Well, I just learned from Seth MacFarlane himself, in an interview with THR, that the scripts are actually finished. He says it’s just a matter of finding the time to actually get it made. So, a fourth season isn’t a definite ‘no,’ just on hold until the production schedule allows.

What Is Holding Up The Orville Season 4?

As a huge TV fan, I know shows can fall apart for all sorts of reasons – finding the right actors, money problems, low viewership, or just messy stuff happening behind the scenes. But with The Orville, it’s surprisingly simple: the biggest hurdle to getting a fourth season made isn’t any of that drama, it’s just finding the time to actually do it.

According to MacFarlane, all ten scripts are finished, meaning the delay isn’t due to writing. The real issue is the significant time commitment the show requires, combined with MacFarlane’s busy schedule. However, he believes filming can proceed quickly now that the scripts are ready.

I’ve got all ten scripts finished, which is great! Honestly, the hold-up is me – I’m just juggling a lot of different projects right now. It’s about finding the time to really focus on getting this one off the ground, but when I do, we’re ready to go full steam ahead. We can start filming quickly once I prioritize it.

Seth MacFarlane had previously mentioned budget and contract issues as potential obstacles to continuing the show, but those concerns seem to be resolved. He’s confirmed Hulu is prepared to start a new season as soon as filming and production can be scheduled. While it’s expected the existing team will return, that hasn’t been officially announced.

So, Seth MacFarlane is super busy right now! He’s been doing interviews for the new season of Ted, and he’s also working on the Ted animated series. Of course, he’s still doing his usual work on Family Guy and American Dad every year. Everyone’s hoping The Orville gets a fourth season, and I’m definitely keeping my fingers crossed that it happens!
