Hollywood is mourning the loss of a legendary actress.
Eileen Fulton, renowned for her role on the soap opera ‘As the World Turns‘, passed away on July 14, as confirmed by her funeral home in Asheville, North Carolina, after a prolonged spell of poor health. She was 91 years old.
Following her graduation from Greensboro College with a music degree in 1956, it took just four years for Fulton, previously known as Margaret Elizabeth McLarty, to make her debut on the CBS soap opera, where she played the role of villainess Lisa Miller until the series concluded in 2010.
Though not everyone appreciated her on-screen persona, Fulton, with a career that included training under esteemed acting coaches like Sanford Meisner and Lee Strasberg, distinctly diverged from the antagonistic character of Lisa in various aspects.
In 2010, she shared with NPR that her aspirations and values were completely distinct from Eileen Fulton. Unlike Eileen, who relied heavily on men for various tasks and wealth-building, she emphasized self-creation, goal-setting, and personal accomplishment. Over time, however, there’s been a blending of perspectives.
For over four decades, Fulton has been a prominent figure in American daytime television, portraying characters in long-running soap operas. In 1998, he was enshrined in the Soap Opera Hall of Fame, and in 2004, he received the Daytime Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award.
Apart from her enduring on-screen career, Fulton also realized her long-held aspirations by performing on Broadway in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf” and the off-Broadway musical “The Fantasticks”.
In an interview with The Washington Post back in 1990, she shared her ambition of becoming the most renowned actress on Broadway. She expressed her passion for singing and moving the audience to tears, only to later uplift them.
Apart from writing numerous books like her 1970 autobiography “How My World Turns” and its 1995 follow-up “As My World Still Turns”, she had been entertaining audiences with cabaret acts in cities such as New York City and Los Angeles for several years. This continued until her retirement in 2019, after which she moved to Black Mountain, North Carolina.
Fulton leaves behind her brother Charles Furman McLarty, her niece Katherine Morris, and her sister-in-law Chris Page McLarty.
In this rephrased version, I’ve tried to maintain the same meaning and structure while using more conversational language.
