HBO’s ‘Lanterns’ Trailer Reveals DCU Series Release Date

I was really excited when James Gunn announced the first Green Lantern project for the new DCU, called Lanterns. It’s supposed to be a bit like True Detective, which immediately grabbed my attention! They’ve cast Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler as John Stewart and Hal Jordan, which is fantastic – those are two iconic Lanterns. The story will apparently follow them as they team up to investigate a mystery that starts in Nebraska. Honestly, though, we haven’t gotten much of a look at the show yet, and I’m really eager to see what they’ve come up with.

DC Studios gave fans their first look at the upcoming series Lanterns on March 3rd. James Gunn announced that the official trailer would be released the following day, March 4th. The trailer features the first footage of Nathan Fillion and Finn Wittrock as their new DC characters, and marks the beginning of the show’s promotion. Lanterns is set to be the first DC Universe streaming series, debuting in 2026.

Following an online leak, Warner Bros. released the trailer for DC Studios’ Lanterns a day early on March 3rd. The trailer primarily features John Stewart, played by Nathan Fillion, and Hal Jordan, portrayed by David Chandler, offering fans their first look at the first live-action Green Lantern project in the DC Universe since the 2011 film starring Ryan Reynolds.

The scene opens with Stewart and Jordan driving down a mountain road. Stewart explains he’s been training with Jordan for two months to prepare to become a Green Lantern, but hasn’t actually used the ring yet. In a sudden test, Jordan abruptly stops the car, places the Green Lantern ring on the dashboard, and jumps out, leaving Stewart to survive on his own.

The pair arrive in a small Nebraska town and are warned by the sheriff to not interfere with her work. A competitive dynamic emerges between them when Stewart boasts about his protective abilities, and Jordan makes it clear he won’t be leaving the Green Lantern Corps. The scene then cuts to a montage of action – shootouts and explosions – culminating in Stewart declaring to someone (likely Hal Jordan) that their time is over.

The trailer doesn’t focus much on Green Lantern’s powers, but it does show a glimpse of an older, worn-out costume with a light brown front. We also see Chandler’s Hal Jordan holding the Green Lantern ring while questioning someone, seemingly prepared to use it. The show is confirmed to premiere on HBO Max in August, though the exact release date hasn’t been announced yet.

The new trailer for Lanterns doesn’t reveal the main mystery, but it does show that Hal Jordan and John Stewart will have a difficult relationship at the start. Even without knowing exactly when these scenes fit into the eight-episode series, it’s clear Stewart’s training to become a Green Lantern will be tough – he doesn’t even try on the power ring for two months after beginning to work with Jordan.

I’m really excited about this new series! The trailer definitely gives me vibes from Taylor Sheridan’s shows like Yellowstone and Landman – it looks raw, intense, and like it’s going to dive into a really dark side of the DC Universe. It’s set in this remote, almost Western-like town in Nebraska, and it seems like John Stewart and Jordan are totally out of their element, caught up in a fight with the local police while they try to uncover what’s really going on. It’s going to be a wild ride!

Viewers will need to be patient for a better look at the superhero action in the show. The initial trailer offered just a brief shot of Hal Jordan in flight with his power ring, a small preview of the Green Lantern suit, and didn’t show John Stewart using his abilities at all. More promotional content will be needed to reveal more.

Good news for fans! With the premiere of Lanterns on HBO Max just five months away, we can expect to see more reveals about the Green Lantern world soon. The show is scheduled to launch in August 2026.
