Netflix is About to Lose One of the Best Loved Movies of the 1990s

I absolutely love coming-of-age movies! There’s just something special about watching characters grow up and figure things out. These films usually show them dealing with big changes, often moving from being kids to taking on more responsibility, all thanks to a memorable experience. They really hit home, especially when they explore first loves and self-discovery, and they stick with you long after you’ve seen them – they’re so nostalgic! The 90s were amazing for this genre, giving us classics like My Girl and Now and Then, but there’s one sports movie from ’93 that I think is truly great, and it might not be available to stream for much longer.

When it comes to classic coming-of-age movies, The Sandlot is often considered one of the best. It was released during a popular era for both these types of films and baseball movies in general, alongside hits like Major League, The Mighty Ducks, and A League of Their Own. But The Sandlot stood out because it focused on everyday kids, their passion for baseball, and the funny trouble they found themselves in. Its simple story is what makes it so special, and it remains a fan favorite. If you want to watch it on Netflix, you’ll need to hurry – it’s leaving the platform on March 13th.

The Sandlot is a True Timeless Classic

The movie centers around Scotty Smalls, a new kid in town, who joins a group of neighborhood friends passionate about baseball. They experience the typical ups and downs of growing up, but trouble begins when Scotty accidentally loses his stepfather’s valuable Babe Ruth-signed baseball over a fence – a fence guarded by a huge, intimidating dog known as “the Beast.” When another ball goes over the fence, the group must come up with a plan to retrieve it and save Scotty from trouble. Their efforts lead to hilarious misadventures, including one particularly memorable escape by Benny, which earns him a nickname he’ll have forever.

Even though it’s set in the summer of 1962, The Sandlot feels like a movie for all time. Beyond just playing baseball, the group of friends experiences a lot over the summer. We see Squints developing a crush on the lifeguard Wendy, the kids navigating a rivalry with some mild bullies, and a bit of experimentation with tobacco and its consequences. Scotty also deals with family issues and tries to connect with his stepfather. The kids learn valuable life lessons, realizing there’s more to both the intimidating dog, ‘The Beast,’ and their neighbor, Mr. Mertle, than meets the eye – and that Mr. Mertle has a significant impact on their lives and the game of baseball.

The story of a life-changing summer filled with friendship and adventure is something many people relate to, and that’s a big reason why The Sandlot remains a beloved classic. It’s not a sad story, but one about a wonderful summer that marks a turning point for a group of boys as they begin to grow up. Like many important moments in life, the summer’s true significance isn’t fully understood until looking back, a theme the movie itself emphasizes by showing us what happens to the characters years later. It’s a rare coming-of-age film with a truly satisfying ending, and it’s consistently great from beginning to end. No movie has quite captured its magic since (despite several attempts with sequels), so it’s definitely worth watching while it’s still available on Netflix.
