Video games often feature weapons, and over the years, we’ve seen countless examples. Ideally, these weapons enhance gameplay without making it too easy. However, some weapons are simply too powerful, ruining the experience in both single-player and multiplayer games. While overpowered weapons appear in many genres, they’re especially common in first-person shooters. We’ve looked at a wide range of games, concentrating on FPS titles, to identify five of the most ridiculously powerful weapons ever created. This list isn’t ranked in any specific order.
1) Turok 2: Seeds of Evil – Cerebral Bore

In the game Turok 2: Seeds of Evil, the Cerebral Bore is a weapon that lives up to its name. While the game has many weapons, the Cerebral Bore is among the most powerful. When you lock onto a large, tough enemy, firing the weapon sends a projectile that actively seeks out their head. It quickly flies towards the target and then drills into their skull with a gruesome sound. Once it reaches the brain, the projectile explodes, instantly defeating even the game’s strongest foes.
2) GoldenEye 007 – The Golden Gun

GoldenEye 007 was a hugely influential first-person shooter, and it featured the iconic Golden Gun wielded by Francisco Scaramanga. The gun has a unique limitation – it only holds one bullet and needs to be reloaded after each shot. Despite this, it’s incredibly powerful, instantly killing any opponent it hits. It was especially notorious in multiplayer, where being the first to shoot often meant an easy win, leading some players to see it as an unfair advantage.
3) Halo 2 – Energy Sword

The Halo series is famous for its incredible weapons, and the Energy Sword is arguably the most recognizable. While it originally appeared in Halo: Combat Evolved and wasn’t usable by players, an update in 2021 fixed that. It really became popular in Halo 2, where it was a huge hit in multiplayer. The Energy Sword is so effective because it can lock onto enemies from a distance and quickly strike. Often, a single hit was enough to defeat an opponent. Although it could be dangerous to get close enough to use it, players quickly mastered the sword, and it’s remained a key part of the Halo experience ever since.
4) Doom – The BFG 9000

Throughout gaming history, many weapons have been incredibly powerful, but the BFG 9000 from Doom is often considered the first to gain widespread recognition for its sheer strength. While the name “BFG” is famously understood to stand for “Big Fg Gun,” other possible meanings include “Bio Force Gun” or simply “Big Freakin’ Gun.” Regardless of the acronym, the BFG 9000 is Doom’s most devastating weapon, unleashing a massive green energy blast capable of destroying almost any enemy. Having this weapon eliminates most threats, and it’s equally formidable in multiplayer matches. The Doom instruction manual describes it as follows:
The BFG 9000 is the military’s most powerful weapon. It’s perfect for quickly eliminating any threats in a room – try it and you’ll see!
5) Perfect Dark – FarSight XR-20

Originally released on the Nintendo 64, Perfect Dark is a beloved first-person shooter that’s been highly anticipated for a remake. The game features a wide array of weapons, and the most impressive is the FarSight XR-20. This powerful railgun can shoot through any number of walls or obstacles directly at its target, using an X-ray scope to help locate enemies. It’s a one-hit-kill weapon, but it’s quite rare to find during the single-player campaign.
