Kevin Feige Teases Punisher’s Role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and How They Work Together

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but exclaim with fervor: “He’s unique! He’s ruthless! He’s THE PUNISHER! The deadliest hired gun ever known! My mission: eliminate Spider-Man!” This line grabs your attention on the cover of 1974’s Amazing Spider-Man #129, marking the debut of the skull-clad vigilante who would become one of Marvel’s most enduring – and brutally violent – anti-heroes. Co-created by writer Gerry Conway and artists Ross Andru and John Romita, the Punisher was initially a pawn of Spider-Man’s nemesis, the Jackal, who hired the assassin to take down the wall-crawling hero when he was falsely accused of murdering Norman Osborn (secretly the Green Goblin, whose death by his own hand was revealed in previous issues).

Hired by the publisher of The Daily Bugle, J. Jonah Jameson, Peter Parker was tasked with photographing a vigilante known as “The Punisher,” who was waging war against the mafia. In disguise as his alter-ego, Spider-Man met up with the Punisher (who at this point had not been identified as Frank Castle) under false pretenses. The Punisher called off the hit when Spider-Man discovered proof that a man named Jackal was responsible for killing his mechanic, Reiss, and planned to frame him for the murder. However, the Punisher targeted Spider-Man again, mistakenly believing him to be the culprit in another case, as depicted in Amazing Spider-Man #135. This issue marked the first instance where Spider-Man and The Punisher reluctantly teamed up to thwart a common enemy: Anton Miguel Rodriguez, also known as the original Tarantula.

Following the conclusion of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” in 2021, Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) effectively wiped Peter Parker’s (Tom Holland) civilian identity from public memory. This means that even Matt Murdock, Parker’s lawyer who cleared him of murder charges in “Spider-Man: Far From Home”, has forgotten about Spider-Man. With Spider-Man’s secret identity hidden once more, could the events surrounding his previous case be the reason why the masked vigilante finds himself targeted by Frank Castle in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day“?

Producer Kevin Feige shared during a press event tied to Fantastic Four: First Steps, that it’s regrettable yet exciting to see Peter in the Tom Holland Spider-Man tales, acting as a true Spider-Man. This is the first time we’re witnessing him being on his own, focusing on safeguarding the city and handling everyday criminal issues, rather than the global threats he encountered while collaborating with other characters.

In the “Home” trilogy, where Nick Fury (a Skrull version), Iron Man, and Doctor Strange shared screen time with him, Destin Daniel Cretton’s “Brand New Day” offers Marvel Studios and Sony a chance to seamlessly blend the character of Spider-Man into the gritty side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Feige mentioned, “When we explore more about this character, we wonder, ‘Who are the other street-level characters he hasn’t interacted with before?'” He enjoys that The Punisher initially appeared in a Spider-Man comic and that iconic cover. Unlike previous cinematic portrayals of The Punisher, Jon Bernthal (who has appeared on TV shows like Daredevil, The Punisher, and Daredevil: Born Again) will be the first to share screen time with Spider-Man in a feature film.

As a cinephile, I can’t contain my excitement about Destin! He’s absolutely killing it with the upcoming movie. Production starts shortly, and let me tell you, he’s got some fantastic comic book covers adorning his art department – eight or nine of them, to be exact. It’s going to be a spectacle seeing those come to life on the big screen!

Details about the plot are being kept secret, but there’s a buzz that the next Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man film could feature characters like Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, as well as villains Scorpion, Boomerang, and crime boss Tombstone. These characters have a history of involvement in organized crime in the comics. Sony Pictures has scheduled Spider-Man: A Fresh Start for July 31, 2026.
