Christina Applegate Details “Offensive” Anchorman Salary Offer

By the beard of Zeus, Christina Applegate made sure she got paid what she deserved.

Christina Applegate, known for her role in Anchorman, recently shared details about a generous offer she received from her costars, Will Ferrell and Adam McKay. In her memoir, she revealed they gave her a portion of their salaries to ensure she remained in the film, and she’s now elaborating on how that idea came about.

Christina shared on the March 5th episode of The View that the first offer she received was quite low – she even called it offensive. She confidently turned it down, knowing her value. Fortunately, the other party really wanted her on board and agreed to increase their contribution. She said it ended up being one of the best experiences of her life.

She described working on the 2004 film as an invaluable learning experience that continued to influence her career for years to come.

She shared that she’d never tried improv before, and the experience with that group was incredible. It was like a masterclass – the kind people pay a lot for – actually taught by Steve Carell. Adam McKay and his team had even pioneered a new approach to improv. She described being part of it as truly magical and said it’s been hugely beneficial to her and her career.

Beyond her professional life, Christina shared personal stories in her book, You With the Sad Eyes, including a short romance with Brad Pitt in 1989.

She wrote in her book that they’d been close friends for a long time. She remembered he would often visit her small house—only 750 square feet with a narrow doorway—and they’d have barbecues and spend time together, usually with other friends around.

At a certain point, the then-17-year-old realized that she had deeper feelings for the 25-year-old.

Christina recalled a moment when she and Brad made eye contact. “I glanced at him,” she wrote, “and it seemed he was looking at me too.”

The former Married…With Children star remembered a date night at the 1989 MTV Music Awards. Surprisingly, she ended up leaving with Sebastian Bach, the lead singer of Skid Row, instead of with Brad.

I finally felt confident and strong, and after the awards show, I ended up leaving with Sebastian Bach, not Brad Pitt,” she confessed. “It sounds terrible to say, but Brad hadn’t fully become a superstar yet. He was still an up-and-coming actor, not the heartthrob everyone knows now.

After many years, Christina said she and Brad both agree their short relationship is in the past and they’ve moved on.

Looking back, we both realized I hadn’t handled things like an adult. Honestly, he deserved so much better, but I think it was time for him to let go of the hurt caused by a younger, rather foolish version of myself – the one who chose a rock star over him! It’s about recognizing growth and moving forward, you know? We all make mistakes when we’re young.

Christina isn’t the first celebrity to publicly discuss her earnings from a big project. Here’s a look at other stars who’ve shared how much they made…

According to Joe Giudice, he and his ex-wife Teresa Giudice didn’t make much money during the first season of The Real Housewives of New Jersey. He revealed on his daughter Gia’s Casual Chaos podcast in August 2025 that they were paid around $25,000, which he considered a very small amount, but they accepted it.

Creating the initial season of the show wasn’t inexpensive. The father of four recalled, “I remember that first big party we threw in my living room cost around $150,000.”

Although the winner of Dancing With the Stars doesn’t receive a cash prize, all finalists are paid through the end of the show, according to season 33 champion Jenna Johnson. She also mentioned that they receive a bonus on top of that. She won with her partner, Joey Graziadei.

Johnson explained that winning doesn’t come with a huge payout – it’s more about the trophy. She also clarified that dancers are guaranteed a certain number of weeks on the show, regardless of how quickly they’re eliminated. While ABC hasn’t confirmed the numbers, reports suggest dancers earn between $1,200 and $1,600 per episode, potentially reaching $100,000 for the entire season. Celebrities, however, start with a $125,000 salary, and can earn up to an additional $50,000 as they advance to the semifinals and finals.

Jennifer Lawrence, who has won an Oscar, earned $25 million for her role in Adam McKay’s comedy Don’t Look Up. However, her co-star Leonardo DiCaprio, also an Oscar winner, received $30 million for the same film.

Jennifer Lawrence acknowledged that Leonardo DiCaprio earns more at the box office than she does. While she’s happy with her own earnings, she explained to Vanity Fair in December 2020/January 2021 that she’s observed a pattern – one many women likely experience – where asking about equal pay is awkward. And if someone does question a pay difference, they’re often told it’s not about gender, but without any clear explanation of why the discrepancy exists.

Jennifer Lawrence’s positive outlook on the issue came after a difficult struggle. When the 2014 Sony email leak revealed she was paid less than her male co-stars in the 2013 film American Hustle, it sparked a widespread discussion about unequal pay for women in Hollywood.

In a 2017 interview with Channel 4 News, Lawrence explained she wasn’t worried about her income. ‘I’m lucky to have the job I do,’ she said. ‘It wasn’t about the money – getting ‘only’ millions for a film is not what bothered me. I was upset by the broader issues of unfairness and inequality.’

Compared to Leonardo DiCaprio’s earnings, Jonah Hill received a relatively small $60,000 for his work in the 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street – before taxes and commissions. This is in contrast to the lead actor, who earned $10 million.

Hill said on The Howard Stern Show in 2014 that he was offered very little money for the role. However, he was excited about the opportunity to work with director Martin Scorsese on the film, so he quickly agreed to the deal, not wanting anyone to back out.

According to actor Jonah Hill, he’d be willing to make huge sacrifices – even selling his house and giving away all his money – just for the chance to work with director Martin Scorsese. He explained that while films like 22 Jump Street are good for earning a living, he’s driven by passion. He’d gladly do it all over again, because for him, meaningful work isn’t about the money – it’s about doing something you truly care about.

Oprah Winfrey happily accepted only a little bit of green to star in 1985’s The Color Purple.

In 2023, the media billionaire told Essence that while they were only paid $35,000 for the film, it was the most valuable $35,000 they ever made. They explained it completely transformed their career and provided invaluable lessons.

Jennifer Lopez made history when she played the late Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla in the 1997 movie Selena. She was the first Latina actress to be paid $1 million for a film role.

Looking back at the movie that launched her career, Lopez said in 2019 she was very young and didn’t fully understand what was happening. She was thrilled they offered her a million dollars and believes everyone involved was trying to prove a point.

This success allowed her to earn hundreds of millions of dollars, and often she doesn’t even have to invest any of her own money.

In a 2019 interview with GQ, Jennifer Lopez explained that she pursues projects out of passion, not just for financial gain. She shared that she even self-funded and produced Hustlers without a large salary, because she believes in investing in herself and following her artistic instincts—much like her song Jenny From the Block represents.

Adrien Brody wasn’t motivated by financial gain when he accepted the role in The Brutalist. He chose to play a Hungarian architect struggling with his work in post-World War II America, and his performance earned him a second Academy Award for Best Actor, despite a salary of just $250,000.

Okay, so I was reading this interview with Brody, and he basically said he needs a big studio movie, like, ASAP! He said he’s gone totally all-in on renovating this incredible place – he calls it a ‘barn that looks like a castle’ up in New York – and it’s consumed him. It’s like, all his energy and resources are going into this amazing project, so he really wants to land a huge film role now. I just get him, you know? It’s a dream!

When asked about his early spending habits after joining Saturday Night Live in 2014 at age 20, Pete Davidson joked to New York magazine, “Do you know how much we make?” He then quipped that his pay—around $3,000 per episode—barely covered a single dinner.

It’s notable that pay for new cast members on Saturday Night Live has stayed relatively consistent. In 1975, original stars like John Belushi, Jane Curtin, Gilda Radner, Dan Aykroyd, and Chevy Chase each earned about $750 per episode. Adjusted for inflation, that’s roughly $3,300 in 2014, and about $4,428 today (in 2025).

Okay, so Kenan Thompson is a LEGEND, right? He’s been on SNL for, like, forever – 22 seasons! And yes, he makes a ton now, way more than $3,000 an episode, I’m sure of it. But it’s amazing to think back and remember he started out on Nickelodeon! It just proves how far hard work and talent can take you. I’ve been watching him since the beginning, and I’m so proud of everything he’s accomplished!

In Demi Lovato’s 2024 documentary, Child Star, a former cast member of All That shared that their first paycheck was $800. They added that, being 12 years old at the time, it felt like a fortune – almost a million dollars.

It turns out Gilmore Girls’ status as a beloved rewatchable classic is literally priceless.

Okay, so I was completely devastated to hear Lauren Graham – Lorelai Gilmore, my Lorelai Gilmore! – say this on Jimmy Kimmel. Apparently, Netflix doesn’t do residuals, which is just…wrong. After seven seasons and then coming back for ‘A Year in the Life’, she hasn’t gotten any financial kickback! But she said it’s okay, because she’s been ‘paid in love and appreciation.’ Honestly, that’s so Lorelai, and it just makes me love her even MORE, but still, someone needs to pay this woman! It’s just not fair after everything she’s given us!

During the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, Tommy Dorfman revealed how little she was paid for her work on 13 Reasons Why. The strike, like the WGA strike, was partly caused by streaming services such as Netflix not sharing additional profits with actors and crew when a show became successful.

Dorfman revealed on Threads on July 24th that she earned $29,953.24 for the first season of 13 Reasons Why before her agency, manager (a combined 20% fee), and taxes were taken out. She worked on 8 episodes over six months, doing all the promotional work and appearing in key promotional images for the show. She also traveled frequently between New York City and San Francisco to film, often working for days without pay and barely qualifying for health insurance.

Dorfman also pointed out that the show’s first season reached 476 million viewing hours in its first 28 days, which is why they decided to go on strike.

Dax Shepard recently shared with Lauren Graham, a former co-star from their show Parenthood, that he was one of the lowest-paid actors on the NBC drama during its six-season run. He didn’t reveal specific salaries or names, but indicated he earned significantly less than many of his colleagues.

But, the Armchair Expert host stressed that he did not mind.

Before becoming a parent, I always made it a priority to find out how much my coworkers were earning. I’d either ask them directly or discreetly check with my agent to get the information.

He deliberately avoided finding out details about his family history at work, and this helped him enjoy his job even when he started to realize how much he was paid compared to others.

In 2005, George Clooney told the Los Angeles Times that he and Grant Heslov each only made one dollar from their film, Good Night, and Good Luck. Clooney explained they had to use all the money earned from directing and acting salaries to fund the movie, essentially endorsing his own paycheck to make it happen.

George Clooney’s passion project, a play about CBS News journalist Edward R. Murrow and his courageous reporting in the 1950s, proved highly successful. Clooney made his Broadway debut playing Murrow, performing for months before the run ended in June 2025. The play earned a record-breaking $3.3 million during its preview week – even before its official opening on April 3rd – proving it was a significant financial success, far exceeding a simple $1 profit.

Christian Bale revealed in a 2022 interview with GQ that he was paid very little for his role as Patrick Bateman in the 2000 film American Psycho. He explained that the production didn’t initially want to cast him, and it was only due to director Mary Harron’s support that he got the part – and was paid the lowest amount legally possible.

Bale recalled earning so little during one job that the makeup artists on set actually laughed at him, because he was paid less than they were.

Although his uncle was Rico, Jon Heder revealed in 2010 that he originally earned just $1,000 for his role in Napoleon Dynamite.

Once the unexpectedly successful comedy film took off, he successfully asked for a share of the earnings. He told the New Zealand Herald that the offer was increased.

Despite a successful career with acclaimed films like Amistad and Blood Diamond, Djimon Hounsou believes he doesn’t earn enough money in Hollywood.

The Beninese actor shared with CNN’s Larry Madowo in January 2025 that despite working in film for over twenty years, and even with two Oscar nominations and roles in major blockbuster movies, he continues to face financial hardship to support himself.

In her 2024 memoir, Rebel Rising, Rebel Wilson revealed she earned $3,500 for her work on Bridesmaids, but the entire amount went to joining the Screen Actors Guild. Essentially, she didn’t receive any payment for the film.

Still, she wrote, the experience was “everything!”

The Australian actress’s career soared, and her salary grew dramatically from $65,000 for Pitch Perfect in 2012 to $10 million for Pitch Perfect 3 in 2017. She earned a total of $20 million from Pitch Perfect 3, Isn’t It Romantic, and The Hustle. However, after paying nearly 50% in taxes, 10% to her agents, and 5% to her lawyer, along with other professional fees, she still considered her earnings a huge success.

Okay, so you won’t BELIEVE what Ellen Pompeo managed to pull off! Back in 2017, she renegotiated her Grey’s Anatomy contract and basically became a legend. She was getting a whopping $575,000 per episode – seriously! And it wasn’t just that, she also got a massive signing bonus – we’re talking seven figures! But the best part? She negotiated a stake in the show itself! Two backend equity points, which experts say are worth between $6 and $7 million! It’s amazing, she’s a total boss and deserves every penny!

In a 2018 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, 48-year-old Pompeo explained that she’s reached a point in her career where she confidently asks for what she’s worth, something she feels comes with experience. She acknowledged that, after playing the same character for 14 years, industry perception might be that she’s not the most ‘current’ actress. However, she argued that while many actors can deliver good performances in a show’s first couple of seasons, maintaining that quality after 14 years truly demonstrates skill.

Ellen Pompeo recently shared that she didn’t resent her “Grey’s Anatomy” costar, Patrick Dempsey, even though he consistently earned more than she did, despite being the show’s central character.

In a March 2025 episode of her podcast, Call Her Daddy, she explained that because the show was named after her, she felt she deserved equal recognition. She wasn’t upset about his success, but rather that her contributions weren’t valued as highly as his, and she believed that would always be the case.

Jamie Lee Curtis remembers earning $2,000 per week, totaling $8,000, for her first movie, the 1978 film Halloween. As she explained to Rotten Tomatoes in 2018, “Really, nobody got paid much at all.”

Although the actress playing Laurie Strode made a good amount of money, director John Carpenter’s friend, Nick Castle, felt like he was living large earning $25 a day to share the role of Michael Myers. (Actually, Anthony Moran is the face you briefly see under the mask, and editor Tommy Lee Wallace also appeared on screen as Michael.)

Looking back, it was a really intense time,” said Castle, who went to film school with Carpenter at USC. He explained to Vanity Fair in 2018 that he was primarily interested in getting on set to learn how movies were made and to see directing firsthand. “I figured I’d be working for free, but I ended up making $25 a day just for wearing a rubber mask!”

Taraji P. Henson received an Oscar nomination for her supporting role in the 2008 film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. However, she was still frustrated years later that she only earned $150,000 for the movie, despite initially requesting $500,000.

In a 2021 interview on the Ladies First With Laura Brown podcast, producer Scott Henson discussed the high salaries of the film’s stars, Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett. He noted that $20 million paydays were less common at the time, but he believed they were justified, stating, ‘I’m not saying they shouldn’t have paid Cate and Brad what they deserved.’

She explained that she was also bringing value to the project and believed her salary request was reasonable, considering the potential ticket sales the film could generate. She wouldn’t have accepted less. Taraji P. Henson said she was very disappointed when they initially offered her only $100,000. Ultimately, she ended up with $150,000, but she admitted it was difficult to accept such a lower amount than she’d hoped for.

Henson understands some people might think $150,000 is a large sum of money, and she wants to make it clear she isn’t ungrateful. However, she explained that after taxes and paying her team, the actual amount she receives is significantly less. She estimated that after the government takes 50%, she’s left with $75,000. Then, after paying her team 30% of the original amount, she’s left with approximately $40,000.

Cate Blanchett has earned a substantial income throughout her career, but her role as the elf Galadriel in the hugely successful The Lord of the Rings films – which made $2.9 billion worldwide – wasn’t her sole source of wealth.

Oh my god, you will NOT believe what she said! Andy Cohen was asking about her biggest paycheck on Watch What Happens Live last August, and he guessed Lord of the Rings! She was SO quick to shut that down! She basically said, ‘Are you kidding me?’ and explained that nobody actually got paid for that movie! Can you even imagine?! She joked that she basically worked for free sandwiches and got to keep her elf ears as payment! It’s just…iconic. I’m obsessed with everything about it!

Orlando Bloom, known for his role as Legolas in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, revealed on The Howard Stern Show in 2023 that he earned only $175,000 for all three films.

Hopefully he also got to keep his ears.
