Five years ago, Lucasfilm announced a remake of the popular Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic game, developed by Saber Interactive. Since then, another game set in the same era, Fate of the Old Republic, has been revealed. Last December, Mad Head Games, known for Hellraiser: Revival, was also confirmed to be working on the project. However, specific details about the remake have been scarce.
Tim Willits, the chief creative officer at Saber Interactive, recently told IGN that the game is still being worked on. This should reassure fans who worried the project had been cancelled, especially considering the development of Fate of the Old Republic. He didn’t offer any further details at this time.
Star Wars Has Changed Direction Since 2021

Willits’ update is both encouraging and disappointing. It’s good to know that work on KOTOR continues, but fans will likely be upset by the lack of significant news for five years. While taking the time to do it right is understandable, the slow progress seems to stem more from internal changes at Lucasfilm than from the complexity of the project itself.
KOTOR is a hugely popular game, so it makes sense that fans are excited about a remake. After the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, the timeline was reorganized with a section clearly inspired by the original KOTOR. However, no specific projects were announced at that time. Many people believed a remake was in development, but wasn’t quite ready to be revealed.
Unfortunately, most of the projects revealed at the Celebration 2023 event have stalled. This likely stems from a shift in leadership at Lucasfilm, as president Kathleen Kennedy started planning for her successor in February 2024. The new leaders seem to have different priorities, causing projects like James Mangold’s “Dawn of the Jedi” and Daisy Ridley’s planned return to Star Wars to be put on the back burner. Instead, Star Wars will return this May with The Mandalorian and Grogu, and then with Starfighter next year.
The recent leadership changes at Lucasfilm will likely affect their video game projects. Thankfully, the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake is still moving forward. Interestingly, this comes at a time when there’s renewed interest in that time period, especially the Fate of the Old Republic game. Many are wondering if Fate of the Old Republic could be a continuation of KOTOR, possibly updated to fit with the current Star Wars storyline, but we’ll have to wait and see.
