With the second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters underway, we’ve now seen eight installments in what’s quickly becoming one of the most exciting cinematic universes around – the MonsterVerse. It’s remarkable how successful it’s become, especially considering the first film, Godzilla, wasn’t a huge box office hit. This universe consistently gives fans exactly what they want: epic monster battles. While this often means the human characters take a backseat, it’s an accepted trade-off for this kind of franchise. That said, certain human characters do stand out, and they usually get a chance to shine in a film or a related series.
Unlike big franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where characters often appear in many films over several years, most characters in this series only appear in one or two installments before their stories conclude. Here’s a look at the actors who played characters with more than just a single appearance.
5) John Goodman in Kong: Skull Island & Monarch: Legacy of Monsters

Unlike some franchises like Star Wars or Marvel, characters who die in the MonsterVerse generally stay dead. There aren’t often magical solutions or time travel tricks used to bring them back, and that seems to be the case with Bill Randa as well.
Interestingly, the character of Randa is unique because we’ve continued to see him even after his death. We briefly saw John Goodman reprise the role in the first episode of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, before his character was killed by a Skullcrawler. Because Monarch jumps between different time periods, we also see a younger version of Randa, played by Anders Holm from Workaholics. Ultimately, we’ve seen John Goodman portray Randa in two different MonsterVerse projects.
4) Ken Watanabe, David Strathairn & Sally Hawkins in Godzilla & Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Following Roland Emmerich’s Godzilla film, many fans feared the 2014 reboot would be a repeat of past mistakes. Those concerns were immediately eased when it was announced that Ken Watanabe would play a character named Serizawa – the same name as the scientist who made the ultimate sacrifice in the original Gojira movie.
The MonsterVerse movies clearly honor the classic kaiju films that came before, a fact reinforced by how the character of Serizawa met his end in Godzilla: King of the Monsters – sacrificing himself to save Godzilla, rather than destroy him. Both David Strathairn as Admiral William Stenz and Sally Hawkins as Vivienne Graham appeared in Godzilla and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, but unfortunately, neither character had much to do in either film. In the sequel, Stenz only appeared briefly in a couple of scenes, and Graham was killed off by King Ghidorah so quickly it was barely noticeable. It’s possible Stenz could reappear in a future installment, so you never know what might happen.
3) Millie Bobby Brown & Kyle Chandler in Godzilla: King of the Monsters & Godzilla vs. Kong

Millie Bobby Brown’s character, Madison Russell, was the clear lead in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and a more compelling one than Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s character, Lieutenant Ford Brody. We saw Madison struggle with her feelings as her mother became more of an antagonist, which added depth to the story.
Madison Russell returned in Godzilla vs. Kong, but her role was secondary to the main storyline followed by Rebecca Hall’s and Alexander Skarsgård’s characters. Essentially, she served as a witness to Apex Cybernetics creating a weapon to defeat the monsters. While she didn’t significantly impact the plot, it was enjoyable to see her back, demonstrating the MonsterVerse’s effort to connect its films. Compared to Kyle Chandler’s character, Dr. Mark Russell, who had limited involvement in Godzilla: King of the Monsters and was almost entirely absent from Godzilla vs. Kong beyond a couple of brief appearances concerning his daughter, Madison had a more noticeable presence.
2) Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, & Kaylee Hottle in Godzilla vs. Kong & Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

Brian Tyree Henry is a phenomenal actor who consistently makes everything he’s in better. He always perfectly understands what a role requires. However, the MonsterVerse films tend to ask a lot of their characters, sometimes feeling overly dramatic. Despite this, Henry’s character, Bernie Hayes, is a genuinely relatable and memorable presence in the franchise, and that’s a real accomplishment.
Look, while Mark Hamill’s Hayes is fine, the real heart of the MonsterVerse, for me, belongs to Kaylee Hottle as Jia. Her relationship with Rebecca Hall’s Dr. Andrews is honestly moving and completely believable. It’s a real shame, then, to see they’ve been left out of Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. It feels odd, especially since they felt like characters who should have been central to this whole series – and considering Jia’s established connection to Kong, who is in the new film, it’s a particularly strange omission.
1) Dan Stevens in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire & Godzilla x Kong: Supernova

The upcoming film, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, is getting a fresh start with a new director and almost an entirely new cast. So far, Dan Stevens is the only actor confirmed to return, reprising his role as Trapper from Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. While it’s unclear what the story will hold for him, he’ll be joined by new additions to the MonsterVerse including Sam Neill, Matthew Modine, Kaitlyn Dever, and stars of Sinners, Jack O’Connell and Delroy Lindo.
